We are currently looking for a Materials Project Engineer motivated in application development of paint and anti-corrosion materials to vehicles to join our team in Farmington Hills, MI.

Job Summary

This role will be responsible for developing various coatings and polymeric materials, including but not limited to automotive finishing topcoat (BODY color), decorative coatings for interior and exterior trims, as well as anti-corrosion treatments, adhesives, sealants, and other materials used in automotive paint shops. In addition, will be responsible for generating, developing and implementing novel ideas that contribute to vehicle quality improvement, cost reduction and sustainability. Therefore, the role will require cross-functional coordination with Suppliers, Manufacturing Plants, Design Engineers and Purchasing to achieve company KPI's (Quality, Cost, Schedule). Flexible working at home and office as project permits can be offered.

Job functions include but are not limited to:

  • Paint Finishing material and color qualification activities using company engineering standards

  • Establish test plan, perform or direct testing using in-house or out-source resources, write technical reports to communicate the progress or evaluation judgment

  • Coordinate material and design changes with related function, arrangement of drawing/specification release and development test report for final validation and approval by management per project milestone

  • Identify and define problems, collect data and draw valid conclusions

  • Value Optimization (cost reduction) activity management

  • Research US local material technologies and create new product specification

  • Work independently within a fixed schedule; domestic and international travel as required

  • Global collaborations with Nissan Japan and other regional engineering counterpart.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS degree in Chemical, or Materials Engineering, or related field; 5 years of experience in related field, or combination of advanced degree and experience required

  • Experience with all aspects of organic coatings or polymeric materials, including but not limited to testing methods and equipment, production processes, polymer chemistry and formulations, applications, etc.

  • Experience with design release, PPAP and drawing creation desirable

  • Direct experience with problem analysis and root cause investigation, such as FTA, and product development and failure prevention, such as FMEA, desired

  • Excellent communication/interpersonal skills required; Experience working in a multicultural environment desired

  • Ability to travel and work overtime may be required

Physical Requirements

Travel:

Between 5% and 25% day and overnight travel.
