Intern Job Description

Position Title: GIS Internship

Department: Utilities

Supervisor/Mentor: Waneya Bryant, Utility Administration

Dates: TBD

Hours: 20 hours per week

Salary: $18.00 Hourly

Summary of Position:

We are seeking an intern who is talented, driven and has a genuine interest in contributing to the success of the Utilities Department Asset Management Program. Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) activities of the Utility, including Geographical Information System (GIS), Transcendent, Iwater, and other systems for the City of Boynton Beach. Candidates for this position will work closely with the Manager of Utility Administration and the Asset Technician on the sustenance of the data management systems. This internship program is set to be on-site, and Candidates for this position must be able to adapt to and work in varied environments, including indoors, outdoors, and project locations.

Eligibility:

The City of Boynton Beach Internship Program is highly selective. Only those with demonstrated potential to thrive in their chosen field of study will be invited to embark on this project-intensive journey. Individuals applying to the Internship Program must be currently

enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at a college, community college, or university or have graduated within the past two years. Additionally, all applicants must know that candidates will not work remotely.

All applicants must hold a clean driving record and full driving license.

Desired

Students must be enrolled in a GIS certification, undergraduate or graduate program

  • Geographic Information Systems and an Advanced Certificate in Geographic Information Systems Communications, Operations Management, Information Technology, or a related discipline or interdisciplinary program.

Must be currently enrolled in surveying or closely related college program;

Solid PC skills and the ability to use Microsoft Applications (Outlook, Word, Excel); and work independently.

Essential job functions:

  • Assist asset management technician with planning, designing, implementing, and supporting Utility GIS application in ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Pro.

  • Provide timely response and establish high priority for GIS map and analysis requests.

  • Assisting in the review and tracking of the organization's fixed assets.

  • Apply analytical and communication skills to assist with coordination and implementation of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) activities of the Utility including the following: Geographical Information System (GIS), Transcendent, iWater, and other systems.

  • Assist in updating content on the Mcivicapps.com web page

  • Works closely with the asset management technician and the ITS Department on the sustenance of the data management systems.

  • Uphold GIS system integrity, security, and confidentiality.

  • Exceptional organizational skills, oral and written communication skills, and attention to detail.

  • Strong quantitative skills and the ability to multitask.

  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with City employees, residents, and community partners.

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions on moderately complex matters and complete assigned tasks with minimal direction.

  • Knowledge of and enthusiasm for establishing and maintaining ArcGIS database quality control and quality assurance procedures.

Learning Goals

  • Knowledge of the City's Utility Department Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) activities and the role of the Asset Management program.

  • Knowledge of local government administration and policy development

  • Build a network of contacts and relationships with contractors and people who can serve as advisers or mentors.

Minimum Qualifications

Currently enrolled in an accredited university [two (2) year, four (4) year, or graduate-level degree program]; or

Recent graduate [within last three (3) years from an accredited university [two (2) year, four (4) year, or graduate-level degree program].

Applicable to the Utilities GIS Intern

  • Must be enrolled in a GIS certification, undergraduate or graduate program; and

  • Geographic Information Systems and an Advanced Certificate in Geographic Information Systems Communications, Operations Management, Information Technology, or a related discipline or interdisciplinary program; and

  • Currently enrolled in surveying or closely related college program; and

  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Applications (Outlook, Word and Excel); and

  • Must obtain and maintain a Florida Driver's License
