International FMCG PZ Cussons has an exciting new opportunity for a Packaging Technologist with 3-5 years' experience. Reporting to the R&D Manager, this role will focus on new packaging development, optimisation of existing ranges as well as identifying cost savings opportunities.

The Role

We are looking for a highly organised and proactive team player to join the Supply Chain Team as a Packaging Technologist. This role will suit a self-starter with a passion for all things sustainable and previous experience in a similar role in FMCG and third-party manufacturing.

The role is responsible for driving the packaging development program for PZ Cussons Australia and New Zealand markets across our Homecare, Baby Food and Personal Care categories. This position is responsible for designing, developing, validating and implementing packaging solutions to meet the business needs. You will introduce best practice packaging development standards in support of our innovation, margin enhancement and sustainability agenda. Working as part of a cross functional team, you will bring innovation ensuring safe and cost-effective design of our products suitable for transit to customers and use by end consumers.

The key responsibilities include:

  • Liaise with suppliers on alternative packaging materials and technologies for innovative solutions and/or cost saving opportunities.

  • Deliver improvements to new and existing products including primary consumer units, intermediate, outer shipper packaging, pallet design and shipping container configuration

  • Facilitate the packaging sustainability agenda for the ANZ business.

  • Drive optimisation of existing products and NPD design with a goal of reducing plastic usage, improving recycled content, and increasing recyclability of products.

  • Ensure all packaging changes comply to appropriate regulations and corporate direction ensuring regulatory compliance in the markets where the organization has a business interest.

  • Validate packaging designs and provide technical input for packaging artwork.

  • Conduct scientific trials to validate packaging suitability and mitigate risks.

  • Build and nurture relationships with internal stakeholders and external partners.

  • Apply understanding of APCO & ARL guidelines to packaging projects.

Ideally your qualifications and experience include:

  • Degree qualified preferably with a packaging qualification and 3-5 years of hands-on packaging experience.

  • Technical knowledge of various packaging materials, structures, and manufacturing processes, encompassing, but not restricted to, corrugated cardboard, rigid and flexible plastics, as well as the barrier properties of packaging.

  • Project management skills and ability to manage business priorities.

  • Developing products with 3rd party manufacturing companies.

  • Developing new products using a stage gate process.

  • Attention to detail, quantitative skills and the ability to think critically.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
