Summary

Primarily responsible for directly overseeing the packaging operation and leading the packaging staff to compliance of the company's procedures and cGMP guidelines on a daily basis.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Under limited supervision from Area Manager, oversees packaging operations and staff on a daily basis

  • Conducts daily department meetings to discuss expectations and outstanding issues

  • Provides direction, prioritizes, assigns and reviews the activities of the packaging staff

  • Ensures that first level quality inspections are being performed by operators

  • Verifies and approves process compliance per batch record guidelines

  • Reviews the accuracy and completion of packaging batch records and paperwork associated with production such as deviations, MTF's, CCR's, pallet tags, etc. and appropriate approvals

  • Assures all Hours Accounting data is reported accordingly into Baan system

  • Works closely with department Manager and prepare weekly work schedule

  • Utilizes manpower effectively; makes assignments based upon line personnel experience, training, and abilities

  • Reviews staffing needs and makes decisions/proposals to accommodate work schedule

  • Oversees cleanliness and safety of equipment and work area

  • Attends production meetings and provides daily updates

  • Ensures deadlines and performance standards for quality, productivity, reliability, initiative, safety, and work relationships are met for all packaging staff

  • Maintains inventory of operating supplies for department; completes and submits purchase requisitions as needed to support

  • Carries out all responsibilities in compliance with the organization's policies, procedures, and state, federal, and local laws

Fully complies with current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP's) and health and safety regulations

Other Duties

  • Meets with packaging staff to discuss work performance/efficiencies; motivate staff to improve production

  • Performs safety inspections and submits to Safety Committee

  • Attend safety committee meetings in the absence of department Manager

  • Assists with the budgeting process; meet budget

  • Assists with new product projects to determine required headcount, run rates and resources

  • Assists Management with annual performance reviews for packaging staff

  • Assists with annual standards review (scrap factor, run rate, headcount, etc.)

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • English literacy (be able to effectively read, speak and write in English)
  • Math skills (must be able to use a calculator and compute math equations)
  • Good communication, training and leadership skills; mechanical ability
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of work experience in a manufacturing/packaging environment

Preferred:

  • AA degree and computer competency with MS Office and MRP software (e.g., BaaN)

  • Previous supervisory experience

  • Knowledge of cGMP's, FDA, OSHA regulatory requirements

  • Knowledge of NAI procedures and packaging documentation

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Responsible for direct supervision of entire packaging personnel

  • Responsible for direct supervision of temporary employees (on call temps) brought in for pack-out assignments

  • Responsible for direct supervision of employees transferring into packaging department

Physical Demands

The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

  • Position requires the ability to stoop, bend over, reach and manipulate objects repetitively while standing for extended periods of time.

  • Requires walking the production floor or sitting at work station all while supervising packaging operations and staff

  • Must be able to lift up to 30 lbs following company's safety policy

  • Occasionally may be required to lift >50lbs with assistance and following company safety policy

  • Excellent eyesight and general physical health is required.

  • Ability to physically respond quickly to developments on the production line

Training

  • Must complete all required cGMP and EH&S Training Curriculum to include additional training in accordance to federal and state standards.

  • Trains operators on all SOP's related to packaging, cleaning, disassembly and assembly of equipment and any other procedures associated with the packaging operation.

  • Trains and reiterates cGMP and department SOP's with temporary employees as needed

  • Schedules On Demand Training for the packaging staff

  • Attends any outside training/seminars as needed

Decision Making

Must be able to make sound decisions related to the packaging operation and the safety and quality of product and personnel.

Financial Responsibilities

Works together with Management to understand and meet department budget.

Communication

  • Effectively communicates with department staff and Management

  • Effectively communicates with support departments (QA, Warehouse, Planning, Purchasing, etc.)

Equipment Used

Various packaging lines and ancillary equipment, hoists, pallet lifts, manual pallet jacks, powered pallet jacks, carts, trash compactors, etc.

Computer and printing equipment

Work Environment

  • Mainly packaging area of the manufacturing facility where exposed to computerized equipment, moving mechanical parts, forklifts, pallet jacks, heavy pallets, moderate to loud noise level, and some air-borne dust and powders.

  • While working, will be required to wear various personal protective equipment such as hair net restraints, face mask, gloves, uniform and safety glasses.
