Position Description:

Develops and integrates assembly processes and capital improvement projects to efficiently manufacture trailers. Leads cross functional teams to implement improvements to existing equipment, manufacturing methods and tooling. Leads complex projects independently with minimal supervision.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with Wabash Manufacturing Facilities and Transportation providers to design packaging / dunnage to reduce/minimize the need for

  • LTL Classifications Changes

  • LTL/Small Package oversize charges

  • Oversize Shipments

  • Escorted Shipments

  • Work with Suppliers and Wabash Manufacturing sites on packaging to optimize transportation and warehouse operations

  • Participate in Supplier PPAP approval process

  • Tests, analyzes and selects materials for packaging based on durability and cost effectiveness

  • Applies technical knowledge to innovate, design, and develop equipment, fixturing, procedures, processes, tooling and/or automation

  • Assesses process capabilities, identifies improvement opportunities, and integrates new processes & equipment to maximize manufacturing throughput and velocity

  • Conducts equipment / process audits and leads necessary improvement efforts

  • Develops process documentation to meet quality system and safety requirements

  • Ensures equipment reliability through the creation of design specifications, preventive maintenance instructions, run-off / validation standards and recommended spare parts lists

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelors in Mechanical, Manufacturing or Industrial Engineering

Knowledge, Training, Skills and/or Experience:

  • 1 2 years of AutoCAD and Solidworks design experience

  • Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma training a plus

  • Microsoft Project (or equivalent) experience preferred

  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office software

  • Ability to multitask and lead / prioritize multiple projects

  • Demonstrated leadership of capital / continuous improvement projects focused on meeting corporate and departmental goals

  • Effective at developing and managing a project plan to achieve desired results

  • Proven ability to achieve required objectives through the leadership of others

  • Strong problem solving / trouble shooting experience

  • Detail-oriented, highly organized, self-directed, and capable of interacting and communicating with all levels within the organization.

That's what our logistics team makes possible—using the latest digital, analytics and data forecasting tools to move material where it needs to be, when it needs to be there. The Product Support and Logistics Division has an immediate opening for a Packaging Engineer in the Lafayette, IN area. In this role, you will design and develop returnable and expendable packaging for individual piece parts and bulk shipping to ensure the timely and efficient receipt and delivery of material. Proper packaging design includes part containment, protection, and optimization of transportation and other supply chain functions. Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: * Establish packaging and processing specifications at the part number level for new product introductions, cost savings, or other supply chain improvement * Communicate with existing facilities on packaging issues related to receiving, warehousing, and/or line side delivery * Perform cost analysis on current packaging processes and recommend changes where appropriate * Lead low risk Green Belt projects * Perform activities to ensure parts are protected, shipped, and delivered to the customer in a usable fashion * Develop packaging solutions to protect finished painted components * Design for transport efficiency * Perform containerization analysis, testing, and quoting * Validate new packaging and containers during pilot phase * Coordinate with operations for storage and ergonomic considerations * Develop kitting packaging * Validate returnable quantities through simulations * Resolve safety and / or quality issues caused by current packaging * Resolve issues reported by customers and process partners * Develop, communicate and maintain supplier packaging requirements * Audit conformance to packaging specification * Joint Process Improvement with packaging vendors and purchasing * Create packaging concepts using 3D modeling software (i.e. Pro-E) If you are looking for an exciting opportunity to join a process-driven, results-oriented team, apply today!
