Job Description:

Our Packaging Engineer is responsible for design, development, validation and implementation of a variety of simple to complex packaging projects supporting new products and sustaining projects. You will also be leading projects of varied scope requiring different stakeholders or cross-functional team efforts. You'll provide support to sterile packaging operations at our internal and external sterile manufacturing facilities. As our Packing Engineer, you'll be a subject matter expert in packaging / labeling equipment, processes, and software for existing operations.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and follow NuVasive's Quality System requirements; including but not limited to understanding of ECO's, validation, documentation practices, and design control requirements

  • Collaborate and maintain cross-functional partnerships with Development Engineers, Supplier Quality, Quality Engineers, Supply Chain, Manufacturing Operations, Regulatory Affairs and others

  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously with acting like an owner mentality

  • Capable of leading/supporting and executing packaging related projects from design through validation

  • Create packaging project timeline, attend meetings, coordinate resources, protocols, reports as required, ensuring effective communication of ideas, information, and issues to appropriate stakeholders

  • Provide engineering expertise in the design, development, validation and qualification of packaging / labeling equipment and software which may include engineering studies and/or feasibility studies.

  • Maintains high awareness of technical trends and developments in the packaging industry

  • Assign, delegate and assist in the completion of engineering tasks or projects to other engineers/team members

  • Performs other job related duties assigned

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree

  • Related work experience in the packaging, medical or regulated industry

  • Knowledge of packaging test methodology per ASTM standards

  • Understanding of packaging materials' capabilities and equipment

  • Experience in a manufacturing environment for designing, specifying, assembling, and validating packaging / labeling equipment, processes, and software

  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills

  • Knowledge of statistical techniques

  • Experience with equipment and process validations, including development of protocols and execution of protocols

  • Knowledge of equipment and tools in laboratory testing and inspection systems.

  • Understanding of physical and structure package testing procedures.

  • Knowledge of GMP/FDA regulations preferred.

  • Ability to create and work from engineering drawings; experience with Creo or Pro-E or other CAD software

Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of medical device processes and effect on packaging preferred

  • Successful experience leading project teams is preferred.

Develops new package requirements and maintains quality of existing packages for all product lines. Determines packaging requirements according to the nature of the product and cost limitations. Follow appropriate tools, performs integrity analysis of packages. Job Description Tasks and Responsibilities: * Responsible for developing package systems. * Design and select primary and secondary packaging components and suppliers. * Write specifications and technical reports for primary, secondary and tertiary packaging components. * Coordinate and lead artwork/labeling development and approval process internally and with contract sites. * Interface with Quality Group and external suppliers to conduct testing (including shipping studies) of packaging materials and packaged components to minimize product damage and ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines. * Develop and implement Standard Operating Procedures for all aspects of packaging. Develop/apply lab procedures for evaluation of packaging solutions. * Work closely with external suppliers to identify continuous improvement opportunities for improving packing designs. * All listed tasks and responsibilities are deemed as essential functions to this position; however, business conditions may require reasonable accommodations for additional task and responsibilities. Preferred Educational Background: * Requires a Bachelor degree or equivalent in packaging engineering or related discipline, and a minimum of 8 years related experience. Preferred Experiential Background: * Experience with secondary packaging equipment (ie capping, bag sealing equipment, cartoners, labeling equipment) design, application, and use is a big plus. * Experience writing and executing validation protocols for packaging equipment and processes. * Must have ability to analyze and resolve planning problems independently. * Should be a lean six sigma Green Belt at a minimum.
