Barilla America, Inc. wants to recruit a Packaging Engineer within GRDQ based in Northbrook, IL. The individual will report to the Packaging Manager- Core Business America.
Job Purpose:To manage the technological and technical ideation, development and industrialization of the Technical Packaging solutions for the existing and new Region Americas Meal Solutions and Bakery product portfolio with a specific focus on the Phase and Gate Projects, the feasibility/costs studies for customer/channel driven and promotional projects (NOT P&G Process FCR / FCA) and Design to Value Packaging Materials Projects (VFM and PCM).
To contribute to the ideation, definition, proposal, development, and implementation of the technical packaging solutions according to Consumer and Customers' needs for the Phase and Gate Projects and for the promotional activities and customer/channel-driven projects (NOT P&G Process FCR / FCA) developing them (technical drawings, technical specifications, prototypes, and pre-series) in cooperation with other internal Function and the external Suppliers (Packaging Materials and Packing Equipment).
To manage the new packaging solutions design process starting from consumer observations and insights, identifying current gaps, applying a Consumer Design Centered approach in order to meet the consumer expectations and improve our current packaging range, developing packaging concepts and mockups to allow consumer testing, functionality evaluations and contributing to the internal decision-making process.
On the new Channels (i.e.: e-com, Food Service, and Clubs) projects, contribute to the identification of the key, innovative technical packaging solutions in order to enable an effective and efficient role in this area for our categories and brands.
To manage, in the area of responsibility, the definition, implementation, proposal for approval and update of the Technical Specifications of the packaging materials purchased and utilized for managed projects as far as materials, performance and quality/food safety characteristics are concerned (Codifications, Technical and Graphics Specifications, Packaging Master Bills Of Materials and Palletisation/Storage plans).
To manage the industrialization of the designed Technical Packaging solutions in order to guarantee the target level of the packing lines' efficiency and the products' expected quality; to this purpose he/she coordinates the resources accountable for organizing trials on packing lines with internal functions and equipment and packaging materials suppliers, organizing and supervising transport trials, managing the related project management tasks both in terms of timing and costs.
To cooperate at the ideation and manage the implementation of the packaging materials and logistic saturation Cost-Saving projects (Design To Value Projects) aimed at minimizing the cost of finished products in line with product quality, commercial requirements, and the regulations in force.
To support the implementation, in co-operation with Purchasing, of the preliminary assessment and qualification of packaging materials new suppliers, in line with internal requirements and existing procedures and supervise the qualification process of the new suppliers within the Purchasing Change Management Cost-Saving Program.
To support the process of ensuring a constant updating of the professional competence by regularly monitoring the technical evolution of materials and packaging technologies, as well as new laws on food safety and regulations on the environment within the different countries, in cooperation with suppliers and the others internal functions.
Bachelor's degree in Packaging or Engineering (Mechanical, Materials or Chemical) required
3-5 years of experience in packaging development with a specific focus on paperboard packaging materials and corrugated board based materials with a minimum of 3 years' experience in CPG
Basic knowledge of the main food packaging processes and materials with a specific focus on the flexible packaging materials for food products with mid to long shelf life (paperboard based materials, corrugated, glass jars and related closures, plastic-based materials such as OPP, PP, HDPE, LDPE, PET, OPA)
Basic knowledge of shelf life definition as it applies to package
Knowledge of printing processes (Flexo, Rotagravure and Offset), flexible materials laminating process and paper-based flexible materials (kraft, bleach and unbleached, coated)
Knowledge of paperboard and corrugated board based technologies with the main focus on vertical cartoners and main gluing/closure equipment, horizontal cartoners and main gluing/closing equipment and case packers (end loaders, top loaders and wrap around formers
Knowledge of flexible materials based technologies HFFS (horizontal form fill seal) and VFFS (vertical form fill seal) as well as pouch making inline and offline (pre-made). This knowledge should include a good understanding of the main parameters which interact to determine the performance of the equipment (COF, sealing thresholds and sealing range)
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Good negotiation and presentation skills
Knowledge and ability to use CAD software(preferably AutoCAD) and Packaging planning software for pallet patterns (CapePack or preferably Tops)
Proficient in MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook)
Ability to define the Packaging Materials Technical Specifications aimed at purchasing and utilization activities
Ability to travel up to 40% domestically and potentially internationally (Italy, Brazil)
