Purple Carrot is looking for a short-term, project-based Packaging Consultant to lead the identification, development, and implementation of innovative packaging, with a focus on our external box, liner, and cooling agent. The Packaging Consultant will collaborate cross-functionally with multiple departments to understand requirements, capabilities, logistics, and processes and leverage his/her background to deliver an exceptional product experience. This will include responsibility for managing the design, development, and engineering process for packaging of new and existing products from concept design through production launch to ensure customer satisfaction. As a meal kit company, it is our duty to ensure customers receive a box that is cold and keep food fresh and safe. The needs vary greatly by season and location, all of which must be taken into account. This consultant will be responsible for ensuring package designs optimize marketing objectives, exhibit robust quality and functionality, provide product protection integrity, are logistically efficient, and meet Purple Carrots business expectations in a timely and cost effective manner.

This engagement will last 2 - 3 months with total number of hours per week negotiable based on final scoping. Remote candidates eligible to apply. Some travel to headquarters in Needham, MA or to fulfillment sites expected.


  • Facilitate the process of optimizing our external box, liner, and cooling agent to meet functional parameters, cost targets, fulfillment and shipping requirements, ultimately identifying new seasonal specs for 2019
  • Design/engineer packaging materials based on an in-depth understanding of given manufacturing, quality, cost, and design constraints
  • Understand, interpret, and refine package testing data and results
  • Identify, vet, and recommend packaging vendors based on product, cost, and logistics
  • Collaborate with packaging vendors to mitigate quality issues and drive cost improvement initiatives
  • Support cold chain packaging development by identifying the most optimized and sustainable material solutions
  • Create and maintain a packaging specification database



  • BS in Packaging or related engineering field
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in package development required. Experienced in e-comm food shipping, cold chain, and commercial logistics
  • Detailed knowledge and experience in materials, equipment, and product interface and interaction
  • Experience working with multiple outside vendors, including vetting, negotiating, and reviewing/validating samples, data, and test results
  • Experience in sustainable packaging materials is a plus


  • Strong interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with individuals at every level of the organization
  • Manage and execute multiple projects at various stages, with shifting priorities, and extremely tight timelines.
  • Able to travel to headquarters in Needham, MA and fulfillment centers
