The salary range listed includes a general wage increase of 3% for all state employees effective July 1, 2024.

The mission of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is to manage, sustain, and protect the health and productivity of Washington's lands and waters to meet the needs of present and future generations. This position supports all DNR programs by ensuring the agency's fleet of vehicles, heavy equipment, and marine vessels are ready to work and safe to operate. This position serves as a journey-level mechanic performing service, maintenance, and repair to light automotive, medium, commercial/industrial, small engine, marine, and heavy-duty equipment based at the Tukes Equipment Shop and in the field throughout the region.Responsibilities:

  • Inspects, diagnoses, maintains, and performs service, maintenance, and repair to agency heavy truck fleet (80,000 GVW trucks), medium commercial/industrial, automotive, small engine, farming, and heavy-duty equipment.

  • This includes equipment, tractor-trailers, dump trucks, fire trucks, refrigerated trailer units, generators, forklifts, graders, dozers up to D6 class, backhoes, and other heavy equipment.

  • Diagnose, service, repair, or replace light fleet vehicle components including engines, drivetrain, suspensions, body parts, electrical, fuel, attachments, hydraulic systems, and other related components.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum 6 years of Journeyman experience diagnosing and repairing automotive or heavy equipment;

OR completion of accredited trade school and 3 years experience;

OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

  • Demonstrate an expert level of technical competency through consistent application of all technical skills necessary to complete repairs.

  • Proficient with office equipment and shop management software.

  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering and supporting an environment that honors diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental justice practices.

  • Perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and public records retention and requests are followed.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:

  • Maintenance/repair shop, office, or field environment. Must be able to perform all physical requirements of an equipment technician such as standing for extended periods of time, lifting, bending, squatting, etc. Must provide and keep an inventory of typical automotive/equipment repair tools available for personal use on-site. Must be able to work overtime, including weekends as required. Must be able to work in remote locations in all weather conditions, sometimes for extended periods.

  • Travel to remote locations for maintenance and repairs may be required with overnight stays at times (up to two weeks).

  • A valid unrestricted driver's license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
