The Associate Director position is a leadership role designed for physician assistants who have both advanced clinical skills and demonstrated administrative experience. The Associate Director will collaborate with leadership and the program team to develop and implement a new inpatient-focused PA Fellowship program with the goal of the first class beginning in Fall 2020. In subsequent years, the program team will administer, evaluate, and modify the program as needed to ensure the education provided to fellows reflects the most up-to-date clinical practices.

The Associate Director is a licensed Physician Assistant who has acquired a broad range of knowledge and skills through the successful completion of a physician assistant program.


Principal Clinical Duties and

Non-Clinical Duties and

Responsibilities:

Staffing:

  • Works with department leadership, Human Resources, and the program team to create PA fellow and educator job descriptions

  • Screens, interviews, and selects PA fellows and educators

  • Ensures all components and documentation of credentialing and CME for PA fellows and educators are up-to-date and maintained

Management Responsibilities:

  • The Associate Director will have co-management responsibility of all PA fellows and PA educators

  • Teaches, assists, and councils the PA fellows to ensure overall compliance with hospital, state, and federal regulations

  • Completes periodic performance evaluations of the PA fellows

  • Completes periodic performance evaluations, direction, and feedback of the PA educators re: lectures and precepting skills

  • Maintains the organization, collegiality, and professionalism among the PA fellows

  • Works with the department to ensure annual HealthStream training completion of all PA fellows

  • Prepares and delivers didactic content to the PA fellows

  • Works with department leadership/HR to oversee any required coaching, remediation, and/or corrective action of PA fellows

Education & Training:

  • Develops and organizes the orientation and training of new PA fellows

  • Designs, implements, evaluates, and modifies the PA Fellowship program curriculum

  • Provides direct education and mentorship to the PA team to further their clinical skills and abilities

  • Prepares and delivers didactic content to the PA fellows

  • Develops and instructs simulation-based training at STRATUS

Program Promotion

  • Works with MD, PA, and RN leadership of the various services to educate them about the program and ensure leaders are supportive of the PA fellows being on their service

  • Develops and maintains excellent relationships with local and national Physician Assistant education programs to promote the PA Fellowship

  • Works with the program team to develop and implement promotional materials and activities

  • Participates in marketing activities to recruit new fellows

  • Serves as an advocate for the program within the Brigham Community

Scheduling:

  • Manages schedules to ensure workweeks are delegated appropriately and distributed/posted in the department/division

  • Develops and maintains didactic course schedule regarding day-to-day didactic course activities

  • Mediates scheduling conflicts and organizes time off and time away for the PA fellows

Billing & Compliance:

  • Works with Provider Services to ensure PA fellows are enrolled and credentialed in the necessary health plans

  • Works with Billing Compliance and department leadership to ensure the PA fellows are educated in and following proper billing compliance rules and methodology

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Acts as administrative liaison between the hospital, physician and nursing staffs, and PA fellows

  • Attends BWH Chief PA and other meetings as requested and implements/enforces hospital policies

  • Participates in hospital-wide committees as requested

  • Monitors and reports on regional, national, and international trends in physician assistant education and fellowship programs

  • Responsible for monitoring and reconciling program financial status

  • Successful completion of a graduate level physician assistant program (Master's degree) accredited by the Accreditation and Review Committee for Physician Assistants (ARC-PA) or such other accrediting agency as may qualify a graduate to sit for the NCCPA certifying examination

  • NCCPA Certification required

  • Must hold a current valid license or be eligible for licensure as a physician assistant in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts

  • Must have or be eligible for, and maintain, a current DEA registration and Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration

  • Must have at least five years of experience practicing as a PA

  • Must complete 100 hours of CME according to national and state regulations during each two-year period of employment

  • Prior management or leadership experience preferred

  • Must have the ability to be self-directive and to demonstrate initiative in addressing the responsibilities of the position

  • Must have the ability to utilize appropriate problem-solving and conflict resolution skills

  • Strong teamwork, communication, and multi-tasking skills

  • Ability to work well under pressure

  • Ability to serve as a role model and mentor for PA fellows
