Research spans basic and applied science through discovery to engagement and technology transfer to public and private sector practitioners. Essential Job Duties The NC State Plant Breeding Consortium, with roughly 25 active breeding programs across 35 commodities, is one of the largest public breeding programs in the United States, and faculty have made highly significant contributions to agriculture through the development of widely adopted crop cultivars and germplasm, as well as through the development of new plant breeding methodologies. With over 90 North Carolina plant commodities spanning crop, vegetable, fruit, ornamentals and trees, and 18 research stations and field laboratories, the NC State Plant Breeding Consortium is in an excellent position to capitalize on new technologies that generate vast amounts of genomic sequence and phenotypic information needed to identify genetic variability associated with the most important traits affecting crop production and the development of new cultivars and improved germplasm. NC State has recently launched an interdisciplinary Plant Sciences Initiative that includes a $160M building supporting space for team science and over $2M in seed money for a Game-Changing Research and Incentive Program in Plant Sciences. These collaborative arrangements provide a hub for integrating the strong disciplinary research and teaching from core plant breeding departments of Crop and Soil Sciences, Horticultural Science, and Forestry into a dynamic interdisciplinary environment. We are seeking a highly respected, dynamic, visionary senior scientist and recognized leader in plant breeding who will lead and contribute to NC State's research, teaching and extension mission at the nexus of Crop Improvement, Quantitative Genetics and Applied Genomics. To grow the reputation of NC State University's overall plant improvement and cultivar development programs through collaborative efforts, the success of this position requires skills and expertise in areas of crop, vegetable, fruit, ornamental or tree breeding programs.
