Job Summary

The Engineer applies approved technologies and architectures to specific requirements. Develop and define plans for the implementation of new plant construction. Responsible for engineering design plans and specifications, including gathering field data and will assure the most feasible, and economical means are used to complete the work. Screens held orders, engineers small subdivisions, building entrance cable, or held orders, and obtains permits. Meets with and serves as a point of contact for larger entities, municipalities, government entities, developers/builders. Occasionally, required to conduct formal meetings and/or presentations regarding engineering and construction plans for the receipt of pricing proposals or bids. Partners with network planning and identifies projects for budgets and prepares justification. Provides cost data to support capital planning and budgeting, at a project level. Monitors and controls project expenditures against their owned projects. Daily system use will include: TIRKS, LFACS, FW/BM, SAP, NDS, WFMT, ARMOR

Job Description

  • Apply a particular engineering discipline to plan, develop, design, and implement telecommunications systems, networks and plant facilities to accommodate demands for growth and new services in the most practical and economical manner.

  • Applies approved technologies and architectures for application to specific requirements for plant additions to respond to requirements for growth and /or new services.

  • Develop, and define plans for the implementation of new plant construction or modification of existing facilities to meet new or increased service demands or improve operating efficiencies

  • Prepare plans and specifications, to include gathering of field data, for new or additions to telecommunications systems.

  • Assure that the most feasible, practical and economical means to accomplish an objective is identified and that any alternatives are also defined for management evaluation.

  • Conduct formal meetings and/or presentations regarding engineering and construction plans for the receipt of pricing proposals or bids as required.

  • Stay abreast of industry issues and technologies through continuing education and participation in industry forums.

  • Assist, as required, other departments by providing engineering designs, cost estimates, studies, and provide technical solutions or documentation to provide service to a customer or assist the operation and maintenance of the plant.

  • Provide cost data to be used in support of the capital construction budgets for implementation of designs, new services, technologies, and industry requirements.

  • Develop project support requirements by identifying the scope of effort required by all parties involved and defining the total project requirements, communicating then to all parties and monitoring progress and cost and producing periodic reports.

  • Perform mathematical and statistical analyses and develop reports concerning the results of certain engineering and construction activities to determine the variance to established objectives.

  • Monitor and control project expenditures, preparing progress reports, defining problems encountered, and provide recommended solutions to management

  • Ensure that the documentation reflects the actual plant as-built data by onsite inspection and that it is correctly recorded in the CPR.

  • Make field visits and contacts to obtain the necessary permits and easements to place plant facilities along with preparing and filing the required documents. Requires direction and guidance with few tasks.

Qualifications

  • Required

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or equivalent experience and training.

  • Minimum 2-4 years of engineering knowledge and experience with a focus in construction engineering or telecom engineering.

  • Valid driver's license, with a satisfactory driving record MVR Required

  • Knowledge of current approved products and technology used in engineering remote electronics, FTTT, GPON, Ethernet , MTU, MDU, aid to construction (BART), Joint use poles and held orders.

  • Strong computer skills required, including experience with the Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Access, Outlook, etc.).

  • Preferred

  • Experience with FireWorks/BidMaster, WFMT, NDS, and other CenturyLink proprietary systems.

  • Knowledge of OSP design and a willingness to learn and to support the Engineer II and Senior Engineers.

This team is responsible for designing, implementing and supporting one of the world's largest and most sophisticated optical fiber networks. The role requires an in depth understanding of current fiber optic design standards and industry processes. Leveraging GIS based design support software programs and close coordination with site fielding staff and graphics personnel you will drive the final product. As an OSP engineer, you will have the unique opportunity to shape Facebook's future fiber network to accommodate our explosive growth. You will be responsible for the initial determination of the pathway routing and construction alternatives to the final design generation and documentation to support the placement of the physical fiber infrastructure supporting Outside and Inside Plant communication facilities. This is a full-time role located in our Denver, CO office. RESPONSIBILITIES * Responsible for design and engineering of overall OSP Solution for Dark Fiber Metro and Long Haul networks. Integrate innovations into the design and engineering practices and influence vendors' road-map. Responsible for preparing technical specification for issuing Request for Information and Request for Tender for route designs, product selection and vendor selection. Responsible for tracking fiber and duct capacity and initiate upgrades before its fully utilized. Manage the production of efficient designs for new development, network relocations and network upgrades. Continuously improve project operation in terms of technical solutions and delivery strategies, and jointly own the timelines for delivery of routes. Quality and safety reviews of outside plant civil design and analysis of underground and pole transition infrastructure. Provide technical direction and inputs for contract scopes, survey and design guidance system, construction requirements, project delivery and acceptance solution. Establish relationships with local third-parties and ensure efficient process are in place, while providing engineering vendor selection, OSP product selection. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS * 10+ years of experience in planning, design, and implementation of Long Haul dark fiber networks. 7+ years of experience with aerial, underground, OSP copper, fiber and substructure design, interconnecting and hand-off to feeder and distribution routes, to connect to other fiber providers. 7+ years experience with various tools used in planning and design of dark fiber infrastructure. 7+ years experience driving design standards and specifications of dark fiber networks and OSP projects. 7+ years experience working with optical cables and fiber products and experience in OSP engineering. 5+ years of experience working with telephone industry standards, local telecom practices and procedures, local city, state and governmental rules and regulations. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS * Demonstrated ability to employ good troubleshooting skills and creative problem solving abilities under pressure. Ability to develop the process flow to accelerate designs with incredible value. Ability to work cross-functionally to obtain and use key data, and coordinate with the team to track as-built documentation. Good understanding of external data sources that exists for field information (geological, pre-existing cables and conduits, utility pole loading, weather patterns and constraints etc.) and record verification (ROW, encumbrance, access to professional/private/military facilities when applicable). Knowledge in SDH/OTN/PTN/DWDM Transmission and GPON. Possess good business acumen and able to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Experience directly managing a team.
