This position is deemed eligible for hybrid telework under DNCR's Telework Policy.   

Primary Purpose of Position:  

This Outreach Librarian supervises the Outreach, Volunteer Services, and Patron Technical Support unit and manages staff and unit activities, including promoting awareness of and access to SLNC-ABLS service to a varied population of existing and potential patrons; recruiting volunteers to work at SLNC-ABLS; and developing and implementing valuable library and reading-related programs and services for print-disabled patrons.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervises unit staff and supervises volunteers when the volunteer coordinator is out of the office.

  • Plans, designs, and implements specific outreach strategies and activities for SLNC-ABLS.

  • Writes, solicits articles, edits, and prepares newsletters for publication and distribution.

  • Speaks to groups and organizations serving existing and potential patrons and volunteers; and participates in presentations at events and conferences.

  • Provides oversight for the local recording program, ensuring that all content produced adheres to rigorous quality standards.

  • Manages the SLNC-ABLS social media presence and assists in maintaining the library's website.

  • Works with the patron technical support assistant to ensure that patrons' technological assistance needs are being met.

  • Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs.

Qualified candidates must have or be able to:

  • Demonstrated experience working in a library outreach position.

  • Demonstrated experience working with accessible technologies.

  • Demonstrated experience in public speaking.

  • Demonstrated experience creating and/or managing social media content.

Management Preferences:

  •  Demonstrated experience conducting library outreach programs and events for patrons with disabilities.

  • Demonstrated experience with the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled program and its network of cooperating libraries.

  • Supervisory or lead experience.

Master's degree in library and information science or a related discipline from an appropriately accredited institution

AND

two years of professional librarian experience.

Equivalent combination of education and experience.

The Accessible Books and Library Services (ABLS) provides library programs and services to North Carolinians who cannot read standard print due to a visual or physical disability. SLNC ABLS is a part of the network of regional libraries operated by the Library of Congress National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) that performs the functions of a public library.

The library circulates 800,000 volumes annually to over 12,000+ eligible patrons through special deposit collections in libraries, hospitals, rest homes, and other institutions and the direct delivery of specially designed playback equipment and books and magazines in large print, Braille, and audio formats to individuals directly free of charge via U.S. Mail. The library manages a volunteer services program, records local North Carolina publications and magazines for circulation, publishes and distributes quarterly library newsletters, and sponsors reading and other library programs and a descriptive video service with support from the Friends group.
