Job Description

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Recreation Manager, performs various tasks as necessary to provide recreation

services to the St. George Community. Assists the Outdoor Recreation Supervisor in providing overall

leadership and direction for St. George Outdoors. Serves as a lead staff while providing feedback and

coaching for all other instructors to ensure a quality culture within the program. The Outdoor Recreation

Coordinator will be competent and capable at leading all programs run by St. George Outdoors including;

bouldering, rock climbing, rappelling, mountain biking, kayaking, paddle boarding, and canoeing.

Contributes to the growth of St George Outdoors through the creation and implementation of new programs

and class offerings. They will serve as an instructor for all outdoor recreation classes weekly and will assist

in maintaining both the St. George Outdoors and St. George Police Department fleets.

Essential Functions (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following

functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.)

1.Assists with development and administration all aspects of a comprehensive and inclusive outdoor

recreation program.

2.Assists with establishing and maintaining a risk management plan for all outdoor recreation classes,

programs and events under their supervision.

3.Assists with managing all outdoor recreation program equipment and initiates repair or replacement as

needed.

4.Recruits, trains, schedules, and supervises part-time employees and volunteers.

5.Teaches and instructs all weekly outdoor recreation classes.

6.Assists in maintaining multiple mountain bike fleets.

7.Assists in administering program budgets, including ordering, purchasing, etc.

8.Assists in preparing individualized facility budgets and/or program budgets as part of the Recreation

Division annual budget request. Submits attendance and revenue projections, staffing needs, new

program ideas, capital needs for facilities, and recommendations for fee adjustments to the Recreation

Manager.

9.Collects fees, prepares and makes deposits.



  1. Promotes and coordinates public relations programs and publicity campaigns to attract participants,

sponsors, and vendors for recreational and special events programs. Works closely with other

agencies, civic groups, and local businesses to promote activities and calendar events.



  1. Recruits, or assists in the recruitment of program sponsors.

  2. Responds to problems, requests, complaints, needs, etc. of program participants.

  3. Evaluates programs and facilities to note areas where improvements can be made.

  4. Maintains program files, contact lists, program evaluations, and reports.

  5. Monitors and inspects recreation facilities; schedules maintenance of physical facilities in conjunction


with other program supervisors; and secures facilities.



  1. May be responsible for implementation and maintenance of parks and sports field reservation systems.

  2. Performs other related duties as required.


Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions

Conditions vary depending on the assignment. May work in both indoor and outdoor recreation facilities or

other locations in varied temperatures. Requires the use of vision and/or hearing to identify and evaluate

emergencies and must be able to respond physically to these emergencies quickly and appropriately.

Moderately heavy physical activity exerting up to 25-75 pounds of force occasionally and/or 15-30 pounds

of force frequently. Moderate exposure to stress as a result of human behavior. All programs require

availability for special events and activities that often take place evenings and weekends and work more than

40 hours per week during peak seasons. May require driving City vehicles on City business.

Note: Must be available to work all St George Outdoors morning and afterschool classes. These programs

typically run from 8:00am-11am and 3:30pm to 7pm, Monday to Friday. A majority of the work hours for

this position will be outdoors teaching and instructing classes.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in outdoor recreation,

recreation, or other closely related field. Related experience may substitute education on a year-for-year

basis. (preferred)

Experience: Minimum: One (1) year part- or full-time work experience coordinating outdoor recreation

events, classes, or programs. Personal experience with one or more outdoor recreation activities such as

kayaking/canoeing/Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP), mountain biking, backpacking, rock climbing, outdoor

foundation skills including camping, wilderness medicine, fishing, map, and compass navigation, trip

planning, leadership, natural interpretation is preferred.

Preferred: Two (2) years full time professional work experience performing duties related to those listed for

this position, specifically in the outdoor recreation industry. Additional relevant experience may be

substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.

Licenses and/or Certifications:

  • Must possess a valid driver license. A valid Utah Driver License must be obtained within 60 days of hire

and be maintained throughout employment.

  • Current CPR/AED/First Aid Certifications or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire and must be

maintained throughout employment.

Preferred:

  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification or similar training and certification.

  • Current PMBIA Mountain Bike Instructor Level 1 Certification or similar training and certification.

  • Current Wilderness First Responder.

  • Current AMGA Single Pitch Instructor Certification or similar certification.

  • Current American Canoe Association Certifications or similar certification.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • The philosophy and objectives of public recreation, and the methods involved in organizing, conducting,

and supervising a program of recreational activities.

  • Recreation activities for children, adolescents, adults, senior citizens, and/or special populations.

  • Recreation equipment and facilities.

  • General maintenance and custodial standards for facilities and equipment.

  • Basic procedures, methods, and techniques of budget preparation and financial control.

  • Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and safety regulations.

  • Recent developments, current literature, and sources of information related to recreation services

planning and administration.

  • Knowledge of the proper use and maintenance of outdoor recreation equipment including but not limited

to mountain bikes, kayaks, and a variety of safety equipment, i.e. helmets, harnesses, life jackets etc.

  • Knowledge of outdoor education principles as well as techniques associated with outdoor activities, i.e.

mountain biking, rock climbing, kayaking, hiking, etc.

  • Marketing theories, principles, and practices and their application to recreation programs.

  • Modern office equipment including basic computers, word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation

software.

Ability to:

  • Perform lead responsibilities over others.

  • Plan, organize, and implement recreational and special event programs.

  • Recommend and implement goals, objectives, and practices for providing effective and efficient

recreation programs. Evaluate programs and make recommendations for improving the programs.

  • May require the ability to schedule and oversee facility use.

  • Interpret recreation programs to the public and determine the recreation needs of the community

through involvement.

  • Elicit community and organizational support for recreation programs, and present material to the

general public.

  • Deter and diffuse intense emotionally charged situations that may arise.

  • Lead youth recreation excursions , i.e. mountain biking, rock climbing, kayaking, hiking, etc.

  • Administer emergency first aid or CPR outside city limits.

  • Educate staff to access and perform initial stages of first aid response including making decisions when

to call for an ambulance as a proper/preventative treatment measure.

  • Use recreation program management software.

  • Conduct community input sessions, surveys and other program evaluation processes.

  • Set up and maintain an accurate budgeting and recordkeeping system. Keep and maintain files

regarding individual recreation programs.

  • Communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relations with other City employees and the general public,

including groups of all ages and socio-economic backgrounds.

  • Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.

  • Work flexible hours, including mornings, evenings and weekends.
