DESCRIPTION

Specialized and skilled leader for a non-credited recreational or sports program. Creates and implements recreational programs for participants of all ages and may serve as a lead or mentor for other program instructors and may be required to provide instruction. Program leaders at this level are required to demonstrate considerable discretion, initiative and independence to resolve issues and perform other duties as assigned.

The Outdoor Leadership Coordinator serves a pivotal role in carrying out the stated mission of the Vice Chancellor Student Affairs unit - to develop the leadership potential of UCSD students. Through establishing cooperative relationships with a wide range of other university and community programs, the Outdoor Leadership Coordinator develops and directs department-sponsored outings and group adventures. Integral to this is researching and implementing programs to provide the opportunity for student leadership, growth and interpersonal development, for both the program instructors and the program participants. Outback Adventures outings, group adventures and orientation programs serve approximately 1000 students per year. Additional duties include a heavy attention on staff hiring, training and evaluation; budget development and implementation for these self-funded programs; risk management for programs that are indirectly supervised and in remote wilderness locations; equipment inventory management and maintenance; and program promotion and publicity.

  • Must have flexible schedule and be available to work evenings, weekends and holidays, to attend on- and off-campus events.

  • Must be willing and able to lead many of the trips that are offered through the program. Commitment to progress toward Spanish proficiency for duration of employment.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Client service minded, entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking skills to resolve issues.

  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills in the English language. Demonstrated creativity in developing new styles and avenues to effectively promote and publicize; ability to speak in a public settings to large crowds for the purposes of marketing a program and its goals.

  • Proficiency in the use of basic computer applications relevant to job duties.

  • Knowledge of campus policies and procedures.

  • Specialized knowledge of program activity and industry best practices. Demonstrated abilities as an outdoor educator including curriculum development for: teaching wilderness skills such as rock climbing; coastal kayaking, backpacking mountain travel and surfing; and outdoor theories relating to: group dynamics; leadership principals; and environmental ethics. Exceptional personal abilities in regards to technical outdoor skills such as but not limited to: surfing, kayaking, canoeing, rock climbing, backpacking, canoing, camp craft, mountain travel etc.; as well as continued pursuit of technical skill development. Advanced knowledge of wilderness outings and orientation programs; general knowledge of recreation and leisure programs and services within a university setting.

  • Service orientation, program management, sound judgment and decision-making, critical thinking, development of original ideas, and creative problem solving skills.

  • Leadership and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization, internally and externally. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain cross-campus relationships for the advancement of the program and the university as a whole.

  • Operational knowledge and management of various outdoor equipment, knowledge of providers, equipment maintenance, and repair; ability to train others to do same.

  • Knowledge of sound approaches to financial management; ability to apply same in managing programs funded entirely by the income generated by those programs. Must be able to work independently on these operations on a daily basis.

  • Advanced operating knowledge in safety, first aid and risk management; ability to independently plan, organize and evaluate risk management policies and programs as they pertain to remote sites and wilderness activities.

  • Theoretical background and operative knowledge of outdoor education principals such as: leadership theory methodologies, decision making paradigms, judgment based decision making, group dynamics principals, etc.

  • Intimate knowledge of the ocean environment; especially as it pertains to surfing, kayaking and environmental processes; and the demonstrated ability to teach these skills.

  • Advanced operating knowledge of wilderness sites in the California Sierra Nevada Mountains, coastal Baja California, Mexico, and the San Diego/Southern California region. Willingness to travel to those sites to lead trips or to research locations for future trips.
