The Phoenix is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to foster a supportive, physically active community for individuals who are recovering from a substance use disorder and for those who choose to live sober. By participating in our physical, social and educational programs, participants build confidence, self-respect, and community. Activities offered include CrossFit, climbing, hiking, boxing, running, yoga, road & mountain biking, and strength training. Through traditional fundraising strategies and revenue-generating ventures, Phoenix is able to provide free programs for anyone with 48 hours of sobriety. The Phoenix currently operates in 45 communities across 24 states.


The primary responsibility of this position is to lead and instruct outdoor and occasional indoor programs for The Phoenix in the Dallas/Fort Worth metro area. Activities may include road and mountain biking, running, hiking, indoor rock climbing, or other related disciplines. Experience leading other activities such as CrossFit, boxing, or yoga is a plus. A strong connection to The Phoenix mission and commitment to leading by example are critical to this position; preference will be given to those with personal experience in recovery from alcohol or a substance use disorder.

The Phoenix is a dynamic, creative and fast-paced environment requiring employees to be flexible and able to adapt to an ever-changing environment. Full-time instructors at The Phoenix are expected to aid in administrative functions of the chapter such as keeping events up-to-date on our website, participating in facility and equipment maintenance, conducting outreach events, and assisting with fundraising efforts, trainings, or other projects that may arise. Weekend and evening hours and the ability to travel in the community are required.


  • Facilitate events each week. These may include rock climbing, road and mountain biking, running, hiking, yoga, group fitness, and other activities

  • Plan and lead periodic overnight events such as car-camping or backpacking trips

  • Facilitate partnership and community programming as assigned (including ensuring coverage of programs as needed)

  • Help build a robust volunteer program, including recruiting, training, and supporting a solid and sustainable base of volunteer support

  • Spread the word about The Phoenix at targeted outreach events, identify outreach opportunities, and schedule events

  • Ensure programming spaces are trauma-informed (accessible, clean, safe, and welcoming) and reflect The Phoenix's core values and community standards

  • Ensure quality and consistency at all events by cultivating relationships, supporting volunteers, and maintaining positive relationships with community partners

  • Attend and participate in local and national staff meetings and programming and partnership team meetings

  • Carry out administrative functions, including updating the program schedule on our website and data entry

  • Support the achievement of quarterly and annual community programming, partnership, and grant compliance goals

  • Manage retail and merchandise inventory, restocking, and reordering

  • Review and respond promptly, accurately and cordially to all inquiries

  • Be an ambassador for The Phoenix at all times

  • Contribute to social media through Facebook, twitter and Instagram

  • Other duties as assigned


  • 1-2 years' experience leading outdoor activities such as climbing, road and mountain biking, running, or hiking in an institutional setting

  • Experience teaching indoor climbing preferred

  • Personal experience participating in multiple athletic disciplines preferred

  • Experience facilitating indoor group fitness activities such as CrossFit, yoga, or boxing a plus

  • CPR/AED and NOLS or SOLO-Wilderness First Responder certification preferred

  • Certification(s) in one or more disciplines a plus (AMGA-CWI or AMGA-SPI; NASM, NSCA, ACSM, or ACE; CF-L1 or CF-L2; YT-200 Yoga; etc.)

  • Minimum high school education or GED

  • Ability to organize trips and events from big picture down to minute details

  • Strong verbal skills including the ability to communicate effectively with people in a group setting

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact positively and comfortably with people from all walks of life, including individuals experiencing homelessness, recently sober individuals, high net worth donors, and elected officials

  • Entrepreneurial spirit, humility, and integrity

  • Excellent professionalism and the ability to work in a high-paced, ever-changing environment

  • Good organizational and time management skills

  • Ability to manage and progress on multiple tasks within a given day or week

  • Ability to use standard office equipment and computer software, including word processing, spreadsheet applications, and email

  • Willingness to work flexible hours including early mornings, late evenings, or weekends as needed
