ACTITITY POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE:   FFA Advisor

FACILITY:                Hardin High School

REPORTS TO:        Activities Director

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The person in this position will provide leadership, supervision, and organization for FFA and carry out the objectives of that program.  The advisor should help each participating student achieve a high level of skill, and appreciation for the values of discipline, and an increased level of self-esteem.  The advisor should establish good relationships with parents and with staff members. As a vocational advisor, FFA is an integral part of the agriculture, career, and technology curriculum therefore; you are required to carry on your organization duties to the best of your ability

General FFA Advisor Duties

To serve as advisor for the local chapter, it is necessary that the teacher/advisor spend time in planning and conducting leadership, citizenship, and cooperative activities for students at the district, area, state, and national levels. A Bachelor’s degree, Certified teacher (5-12), Class 4 teaching license in Livestock Production and/or Plant Science is preferred. FFA advisers must be licensed by the state in which they work, so holding a bachelor's degree is necessary, and majoring in agricultural education is recommended, according to the NAAE. (National Association of Agricultural Educators)

Supervised Agricultural experience programs of all students who are in FFA are required.

This will include, but not limited to:

  • Assisting students in selecting a program that fits their interests and abilities;

  • Maintain records; all students in Agriculture Education and FFA should maintain records.

  • The preferred method should be an online system approved by the FFA Board of Directors; currently A.E.T.

  • Making supervisory visits during the school year and during the summer months to observe the members SAE progress as they prepare for the County Fair.  an extended contract should be negotiated for 20 days during the summer to fulfill the SAE requirements. 

Other duties include:

  • Supervising the school farm and maintaining FFA owned equipment

  • Prepare and submit FFA rosters, POA, entries, registrations, etc. required by the local, district, area, state, and office promptly, and keep an accurate file copy of all records and reports.

  • Practice with members for their Leadership Development Events and Career Development Events in which they will compete at the district, state and national levels

  • NILE

  • Montana Ag Expo

  • District Qualifying Contests

  • Montana State Convention

  • Assist members with their degree applications

  • Supervise the design of and the constant updating of the local FFA constitution Supervise money-making projects for the purpose of raising money to attend various FFA meetings and conferences .

  • Maintain a positive balance in the FFA student account

  • Is knowledgeable of the Student Council/District procedures regarding fundraising and event policies.

  • As a vocational instructor/advisor, FFA is an integral part of the agriculture, career, and technology curriculum therefore, you are required to carry on your organization duties to the best of your ability.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION:

Bachelor’s Degree

Proper Montana Teacher Certification, Class 4 teaching license in Livestock Production and/or Plant Science is preferred.

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:

Exhibit qualities of leadership and organization ability and reflect a spirit of cooperation in working with staff and school administration

Knowledgeable of the Student Council/District procedures regarding fundraising and event policies

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field

Ability to effectively communicate, orally and in writing, with students, parents, staff, and the community in general

Ability to handle stressful situations

Ability to effectively manage time and responsibilities

Ability to maintain confidentiality of employee and student matters

Ability to perform duties with an awareness of all District requirements and Board policies

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, occasionally walk and stand.  The employee must be able to lift and / or move up to 50 pounds. Will travel from building to other sites.

Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee rarely performs routine work. The employee frequently exercises flexibility (ability to shift from one task to another). Guidance and reinforcement are usually available. The employee frequently works within time constraints and maintains attentiveness intensity. The employee is frequently involved in social interactions which require oral and written communications.
