The Outside Plant (OSP) Engineer designs various outside plant facilities (carrier, copper cable, fiber cable). Provide detail solutions required for feeder facility relief with close coordination with the client. Provide design solutions on all service order requests received for facilities.
Essential Job Functions:
Secures the necessary field information, record verification, document preparation, data input, preparing work order construction prints, and records posting in the completion of assigned work.
Completes the detailed design of distribution and feeder facilities in a timely manner to meet the service demands.
Coordinates with clients on the analysis of an assigned area for growth, modernization, or rehabilitation of network facilities.
Identifies possible growth prospects in a given area and its immediate and long term impact on the clients network.
Makes recommendations on all findings and needed changes.
Monitors cable capacities on distribution facilities and inform client of needs and timing for network relief.
Develops innovative methods to most economical satisfy capacity requirements through application of telecommunications facility design and engineering practices.
Serves as a resource to construction and maintenance personnel of client to ensure that construction is performed within standard design practices. Estimate expense and capital expenditures required to perform a proposed project. These costs include engineering, construction, and material expenditures associated with a particular project.
Acts as interface to external customers on the clients behalf to effectively negotiate service requirements and time frames on future or unique undertakings. Locate new growth and other activity, which will require rearrangements and/or additions to outside plant facilities.
Coordinates with other entities (utilities, governmental agencies, contractors, developers, etc.) to determine proper and efficient placement of potentially shared/joint use facilities. Handle all calls and correspondence from external entities and complete requested action. Coordinate the provisioning or relocation of clients facilities to accommodate the needs of other entities.
Handles demands for service that require facility design/construction or rearrangements in a timely manner as described by clients service practices. Resolve any outstanding records discrepancies that may require facility records research or field visit.
May also perform the following: drafting of small jobs, update facility records, and supervise plant construction.
Perform other work-related duties as required.
Qualifications and Requirements:
Bachelors degree in telecommunications, engineering or related field is preferred.
Equivalent business experience or training considered.
Minimum of 4 years engineering design experience with 3 years in design of telecommunication networks.
Frontier, AT&T, Crown Castle or Verizon outside plant experience a plus.
Must have a complete understanding of outside plant design principles, work order procedures, telephone industry standards, and be in compliance with the latest revisions of the National Electric Safety Code, the National Electric Code, practices and procedures, local and governmental jurisdiction, and be in accordance with instructions supplied.
Competency is required to design various outside plant facilities (carrier, copper cable, fiber cable) in an assigned area.
Exposure to permitting, engineering, contractor management, fiber splicing, project management, different types of underground and aerial cable plant installation and maintenance.
Strong OSP construction knowledge with ability to read/red-line construction drawings to facilitate new builds, relocations, and emergency repairs.
Operating knowledge of CAD system. Moderate computer skills, including Microsoft Office products and email.
