Summary:

The Orthotics Technician role appropriately cares for patients of all ages; responsible for application and removal of casts including complex casting and orthopedic splints and devices; accesses appropriate reference/resource manuals as needed; accurately documents all patient care interactions; performs assigned duties as scheduled and meets deadlines. This position requires a fundamental knowledge of technical work with orthopedic bracing and casting related activities; placing patient needs as a priority; empathizing with patients; maintaining strict confidentiality; remaining calm and composed in difficult situations; prioritizing and organizing to optimize available resources; adhering to policies and procedures and leading others by example. This position demonstrates excellent customer service performance in that his/her attitude and actions are always consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission and Values of Covenant Health Care and the commitment to Extraordinary Care for Every Generation.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform application, modification, repair and fitting of a wide variety of casts, splints and braces with minimal or no supervision per physician order using appropriate casting/ splint material with body in appropriate position. • Casting activities include application of upper and lower extremity casts from simple to complex using a variety of materials; arrange, assemble and adjust traction equipment; apply and adjust braces and splints; and remove sutures and staples. Shape cast to ensure maximum comfort and minimum unnecessary pressures. Trim and remodel cast to ensure comfort and fit with cast knife, cast cutter, and cast spreader to remove parts of cast and to enlarge cast to decrease pressure in swollen area. • Obtain measurements from patient as necessary and prepare mold of appropriate part of patient's body ensuring body part in proper alignment. • Position, align and adjust orthopedic device to physician specifications on correct body part ensuring correct fit to patient with maximum possible comfort. • Instruct patient on use, adjustment, and adaptation and care of device. • Fit support stockings per physician order. • Obtain equipment for physicians and other providers on request. • Fit patient and instruct on use of crutches and canes. • Maintains medical records and clinical standards in compliance with regulatory agencies and Covenant HealthCare policies/procedures. • Demonstrates awareness and sensitivity to patient rights. • Under the guidance of the Practice Manager, assists in maintaining all CLIA, OSHA, HFAP and Corporate Compliance regulations. • Functions with an awareness of safety issues. • Demonstrates awareness of confidentiality and legal issues in all aspects of patient care. • Meets or exceeds all competency requirement expectations.

Other information:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS High School diploma and/or equivalent required. Prior experience as a Casting Technician, Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, Orthopedic Surgical Technician is required.

Educational courses related to casting preferred. BLS certification required (within 6 months of hire). KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES • Knowledge of orthopedic devices and their usage, fracture casting techniques. • Familiarity or ability to learn with medical terminology. • Knowledge of and ability to implement aseptic technique. • Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills. • Basic computer/typing skills. • Ability to remain calm in stressful/difficult situations. • Ability to maintain confidential information. WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards. • Constant handling, feeling, talking, hearing, tasting, smelling, and near vision • Frequent lifting up to 25 lbs. • Frequent standing, walking, twisting, reaching, depth perception, and field of vision • Occasional lifting up to 100 lbs. or more. • Occasional sitting, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, squatting, crawling, and far vision.
