From rural counties to metropolitan freeways, Troopers are trained to do it all. Oregon's geographic diversity calls for a wide variety of duty assignments. Troopers may find themselves conducting enforcement not only in our standard police cruisers but also by airplane, pickup, ATV, snowmobile, horseback, and an assortment of watercraft, from white water rafts to ocean-going craft.

The hiring process for recruits is extensive. The time from application to appointment can exceed several months. There are seven steps in the hiring process. The Oregon State Police is seeking Recruit Troopers for positions available at various locations throughout Oregon. Recruits will be assigned a Duty Station in Oregon as part of a Conditional Job offer. The agency currently has critical needs in Astoria, Coos Bay, Gold Beach, Hermiston and Pendleton . Successful candidates who relocate to Astoria, Coos Bay, Gold Beach, Hermiston or Pendleton as their assigned duty station may be eligible for moving expenses to be paid. See DAS Policy 40.055.20 for details. The agency's operational needs will weigh heavily on the initial assignment of hired Troopers. However, we work with our staff to identify locations that are geographically compatible with their desired location.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Be a United States Citizen by birth or Naturalized United States Citizen
  • OR- able to attain citizenship within 18 months of hire *OAR 259-008-0019 - 1 Citizenship (a) (b)
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent*

  • Applicants must be 21 years old on the first day of employment per OAR 259-008-0010

  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license

  • Meet all applicable medical and physical requirements, AND;

  • Pass all applicable background, credit, and criminal history checks

  • Be in good health and of good moral character: moral character is defined as possessing the attributes of empathy, courage, fortitude, honesty, loyalty, and additional virtues deemed to be morally good

Preferred Skills:

  • General knowledge and ability to interpret and apply Oregon Revised Statue (ORS) and Oregon Administrative Rule (OAR)

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills that can de-escalate a situation, end an attempted assault and maintain mental and emotional safety

  • Ability to apply critical thinking and decision-making skills in stressful situations where timely resolution is required

  • Demonstrated ability to perform under pressure and maintain composure in a position highly subject to public scrutiny

  • Demonstrated integrity and ethics along with responsibility and accountability in all professional and personal interactions

  • Demonstrated knowledge and desire to learn about law enforcement as a career. This is to include participating in ride-alongs with OSP or other law enforcement agencies, knowledge of the OSP mission and values, and actively preparing for a career in law enforcement

About the Agency

The Oregon State Police is a multi-disciplined organization charged with protecting Oregon's people, wildlife, and natural resources. We enforce the traffic laws on the state's roadways, investigate and solve crimes, conduct post-mortem examinations and forensic analysis, and provide background checks and law enforcement data.
