Baylor Scott & White Medical Center at Uptown is seeking a qualified Operating Room Orderly/Retractor Holder to fill a Full-Time need.

Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Uptown is a joint venture surgical hospital between Baylor Scott & White Health (BSWH), United Surgical Partners International (USPI), and local physicians. Baylor Scott & White Medical Center- Uptown provides a wide range of medical and surgical services for to the greater North Texas area across 8 ORs, 24 private Inpatient rooms, a full-service ED. The hospital specializes in both inpatient and outpatient procedures in Orthopedics, Joint Replacement, Spine, General, Bariatrics, Surgical Oncology, ENT, Reconstructive Surgery, and other surgical specialties.

REPORTS DIRECTLY TO: the OR Manager/Director of Nursing

TYPICAL DEMANDS: Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, pulling or pushing of carts. Frequent standing and walking or other means of mobility for extended periods of time. The ability to move and position large equipment such as c-arm, flouroscan, Stryker towers, beds, or gurneys. Requires exposure to bodily fluids, communicable diseases, toxic substances and radiation.

Job Summary/Duties:

Provides assistance during the surgical procedure by providing retraction under the direct supervision of the surgeon. Assists Central Services in the cleaning, disinfection and sterilization of instruments under the direct supervision of the Central Services Manager. Pulls cases as necessary Transportation of patients to and from Surgery. Insures relevant cleaning measures for the control and prevention of infection. Includes cleaning, disinfecting, and disposal of soiled linen and solid waste

  • Assist with room turnover and preparation for following procedures in a timely manner

  • Collect and properly dispose of all wastes including biohazardous materials

  • Assists with limited patient care in the operating, recovery, and procedure rooms as needed, specified, and directed under the supervision of a Registered Nurse

  • Orders and stocks supplies for the areas assigned

  • Transporting equipment and supplies to/from OR to storage

  • Manage inventory of supplies

  • Under supervision, Holds retractors in the operative suite

  • Weekly and monthly cleaning of designated areas as assigned by Infection control Nurse

  • Aids with continuous patient flow by providing pre-operative area with clean stretchers and /or moveable recliners, as necessary

  • Assists with removal of dirty linens and placing trash in appropriate receptacles

  • Maintain patient/facility confidentiality at all times

  • Ensures relevant cleaning measures for the control and prevention of infection

  • Includes cleaning, disinfecting, and disposal of soiled linen and solid waste

  • Assist nurses as assigned

  • Assists with the safe transfer of patient to gurney

  • Assists with routine care, maintenance, and troubleshooting of designated equipment and devices

  • Assists with the rotation, receiving, checking of out dates and storage of supplies

  • Participates in quality assurance / performance improvement program

  • Participates in activities as assigned to acquire and maintain accreditation

  • Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of and compliance with safety policies and procedures, recognizes safety hazards, and initiate appropriate corrective and/or preventative measure

Education:

  • High school graduate or equivalent.

Required Experience:

  • Required: verifiable experience as a retractor holder in the OR setting prior to 2009 or graduate of a qualified surgical technology program; must complete certification exam within 180 days of graduation.

  • Required: good working knowledge of sterile technique

  • Current certification in CPR preferred

  • Possess the ability to follow established cleaning methods in performing daily tasks.

  • Possess the ability to multi-task.

The RN will provide direct and indirect patient care in the emergency care setting. The RN will also provide care that reflects initiative, flexibility and responsibility indicative of professional expectation with a minimum of supervision. The RN must be able to triage safely, rapidly and accurately, every patient that enters the emergency care system. Must be able to determine priorities of care based on physical and psychosocial needs, as well as factors influencing patient flow through the system. The RN must communicates with Emergency Department physician as about changes in patient's status, symptomology and results of diagnostic studies.
