Contributes to the Hospital's mission by serving the dual role of an OR Registered Nurse and Service Line Specialist. This professional licensed position will have an impact on the OR's operations by keeping current with efficient and clinically effective equipment and materials available for the service line and ensuring smooth operations of the service line by preempting and training and ensuring appropriate supplies and equipment are available as needed. This position will also have a dramatic impact on physician satisfaction by monitoring and communicating the physician preferences for service line procedures.

Job Description:

In addition to a dual role as a nurse, this role has four components:

1.Service Line Resource:

  • Acts as a resource in the service to provide ongoing support incorporating evidence based practice.

  • Collaborates with the Nurse Manager, Lead Clinical Nurse, Materials Management, Central Materials Services and vendors to provide education and set up in-services for staff relating to area of specialty.

  • Provides and/or coordinates in-service education on new equipment, procedures, or processes.

  • Precepts and educates orientation of new staff to the specialty.

  • Updates key stakeholders regularly regarding changes in specialty procedures. Key stakeholders include but are not limited to: Nurse Manager, Lead clinical nurse, clinical nurse specialist, Materials Management staff, biomedical staff, sales representatives/vendors, surgical booking staff, surgeons, and surgeon's office staff.

  • Assist with assigning of staff to cases in the specialty to achieve continued competence in all specialties.

  • Maintains advanced competence to scrub and circulate in all specialties.
    2.Equipment/Materials Trial Facilitator

  • Coordinates new equipment/supply trials and implementation in a cost efficient manner.

  • Facilitates the new equipment/materials process by:

  • Meeting with vendors to learn of new equipment/materials options.Recommending trials by presenting to Surgical Services and Materials Management leadership.

  • Meeting with physicians to encourage participation and openness to change.

  • Coordinating trial period, which involves intricate scheduling among several key players over the intended period of time. Collecting feedback from the team participating in the trial.

  • Collaborating with team to address roadblocks and encourage standardization.

  • Presenting with recommendations.

  • Coordinating the implementation of the new equipment/materials including but not limited to:

  • Training staff and providers on the new equipment/materials or arranges training by other sources.

  • Writing and distributing procedures

  • Collaborating with physicians to encourage adoption/change with the goal of standardization and best practices.
    3.Service Line Equipment/Supplies Expeditor

  • Recommends par levels for Service Line related supplies, with a sensitivity to cost containment, avoiding waste and recognizing limited space.

  • Reviews surgical schedule in advance and ensures availability of necessary equipment and supplies.

  • Communicates changes in surgical schedule and equipment availability to surgeons and their office staff.

  • Communicates changes to staff relating to inventory and supplies relating to service.

  • Contributes to development of capital and operational budgets of the operating room, in collaboration with the Nurse Manager as necessary.
    4.Physician Preference Card Caretaker

  • Creates and updates accurate and timely of physician's preference cards

  • Communicates non-standards request to the Nurse Manager.

  • Encourages physicians to implement standardization and best practices.

  • Communicates changes timely to all stakeholders impacted by changes to the physician's preference cards.
