We are looking for an Optometric Technician to join our growing team. The Optometric Technician assists the Optometrist by conducting pre-screenings and testing prior to the doctor examination.

What would you do? The Specifics

  • Ensure high quality patient care.

  • Maintain a professional atmosphere and appearance of doctor's office and pretest room.

  • Understand ocular terminology and diseases and know the ocular abbreviations.

  • Explain to the patient the types of preliminary examinations.

  • Complete necessary paperwork and perform testing on patients prior to doctor examination.

  • Promote visual field testing and retinal screenings to eligible patients.

  • Perform exam pre-screening.

  • Review prescriptions and/or patient information carefully and identifie special needs. Consult with the optician, Doctor or Retail Management when necessary.

  • Ensure equipment, both Doctor's and pre-test, is properly maintained.

Salus operates four clinical facilities in the Philadelphia area that provide highly specialized vision, hearing and balance, and speech-language pathology services. The University has more than 1,100 students, including PhD candidates, and more than 12,500 alumni worldwide. Salus University is seeking a skilled professional to fill the position of a temporary part-time Optometric Technician. The position will begin in January 2019 and end in May 2019. Primary Function: Provide direct patient care, assistance to clinicians with patient care-related activities, and supervision and education to students, primarily in the Specialty Services area at the Eye Institute. Principal Duties and Responsibilities: * Provide organizational and clerical support to facilitate optimal patient care and operations at the main clinic and satellites. * Solve problems and make guided decisions about patient care issues and area function. * Facilitate the coordination of patient services within the clinic and Specialty Care (e.g. specialty testing and primary care appointments; Retina and Glaucoma services). * Work with optometric interns and residents to ensure that they are properly trained in selected patient care procedures, techniques and systems within Specialty Care. * Provide direct patient care services, including: Visual field testing, ocular photography, optical coherence tomography, ultrasonography, vision screenings, contact lens dispensing, pre-exam data collection and patient education. * Obtain medical records in advance of a patient's appointment, as appropriate. * Assist in ensuring that all hardware and software used in specialty services is functional and ready to use for patient care activities. Report non-functioning or defective equipment to supervisor immediately. * Calibrate and maintain ophthalmologic equipment to ensure proper disinfection and working order. * Stock clinical workstations, exam/procedure rooms as assigned. * Ensure that all supplies are up to date and initiate the reorder of supplies as needed. * Participate in the Vision Screening/Eye Examination programs offered by Salus University for local school districts. * Assist in the management of infectious waste. * Assist in the handling of patient and other correspondence and reports as necessary. * Other related duties as assigned. Work Requirements: Education/Experience: * High school diploma or equivalent required. Successful completion of a Optometric or Ophthalmic Technician program or the equivalent on the job training. Skills and Other Requirements: * Demonstrated ability to preform Optometric technician duties at a consistently high level of independence and competence. * Conflict management skills and ability to maintain composure in a high stress, fast paced clinic environment. * Excellent verbal and written communication skills, excellent telephone manner. * Knowledge and understanding of ophthalmic terminology. * Knowledge of manage care requirements and third party insurance and billing. * Experience with computers, including knowledge of and experience with word processing, database, and spreadsheet programs. * Certified Paraoptometric Technician preferred.
