The chosen candidate will participate in the development of new optical transport platforms for Calix Optical Access Networks. They will work with experienced engineers, developing plans to assure cutting edge optical transport technologies will satisfy the operating requirements of current and future Calix communications systems. This position involves optics and systems lab work.

The chosen candidate will participate in the development of new optical transport platforms for Calix Optical Access Networks. They will work with experienced engineers, developing plans to assure cutting edge optical transport technologies will satisfy the operating requirements of current and future Calix communications systems. This position involves optics and systems lab work.

  • Participates in electrical and optical requirements analysis, functional analysis, performance analysis (e.g. optical loss, timing, power, etc.), design, integration and verification of electrical and optical components, equipment and systems.

  • Performs optical engineering root cause analysis, conducts experimental tests, evaluates results to formulate and implement solutions to issues.

  • Participates in optical reviews of optical components, equipment and systems.

  • May provide recommendations for cost reduction efforts.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Must have knowledge of optical communication methods, semiconductor lasers (direct modulation and external modulation), avalanche photodiodes, 10 to 25 Gigabit data rate communications. Fiber optic dispersion penalty experience a plus.

  • Optical fiber signal propagation relating to high speed communications with single mode optical fiber. Nonlinear and polarization effects study a plus.

  • Must have studied IEEE 802.3 standards for optical communications. TCP/IP and data communications knowledge a plus.

  • Must be proficient with high speed oscilloscopes, Bit Error Rate measurements and calculations, and optical loss budget planning.

  • Coherent Optical Communication experience or study a plus.

  • Experience with Optical Communications modelling software a plus (e.g. Optisim).

  • Experience or study with Silicon Photonics a plus.

  • Experience with alignment and optical components for system integration, metrology, testing, etc.

Qualifications

  • 0 - 2 years' experience in optical networking.

  • BS Physics, BS Electrical Engineering, BS Optics, or other related disciplines.

  • Strong presentation and communication skills.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications

  • Good written and verbal communications skills

  • Ability to work well in a team environment

  • Ability to work on multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
