Lumentum DIB Scholarship
Lumentum awarded scholarships of $10,000.00 to 10 of our 2022 U.S. based interns from underrepresented groups. We will also award scholarships in 2023. To be considered for the scholarship, the first thing you need to do is apply for a Lumentum internship so you can be considered for a job with us. To receive the DIB scholarship, you must complete a summer internship with Lumentum.
Overview
The Commercial Lasers Advanced R+D team is responsible for developing a wide range of products, components, systems, and processes relating to novel high power (hundreds-of-Watts to multi-kW) CW and pulsed laser products.
Responsibilities
The Optical Scientist Intern will play an important role in the development, design, and test of optical components, systems, or processes. S/he will work closely with other members of the R+D team to develop novel solutions to challenging high-power fiber laser problems. The Optical Scientist Intern's responsibilities would include but not be limited to:
Co-developing, characterizing and testing a laser based glass processing system
Working with other R+D team members to design, build, and/or test prototype fiber laser components/subsystems in the lab
Analysis and presentation of data to R+D and broader teams
Working with members of cross-functional team (e.g. EE, ME) to design and implement test fixtures, rapidly prototype new designs, etc
Numerical modeling of waveguide devices using industry-standard and proprietary software tools
If COVID restrictions allow for it, this internship will be on-site in San Jose, California.
Minimum Qualifications
Desired Qualifications
Currently enrolled Master's or PhD degree students
Solid data analysis, critical thinking, and problem solving skills
Strong communication, organization, and interpersonal skills
Passion for building things, and translating ideas from concept to existence
Hands-on experience with lasers and common test equipment including power meters, optical spectrum analyzers, beam profilers, etc
Hands-on experience with common fiber optics lab equipment, such as fiber cleavers, fusion splicing equipment, etc. Hands-on experience with common table-top optics and optical system alignment
Experience with matlab, python, and/or labview. Familiarity with CAD or Zemax a plus
Relevant coursework on optics, waveguides, lasers, and/or optical design
Physical and Environmental Conditions
Duties involve working with high average power lasers, optical fibers, laboratory chemicals, and other potentially hazardous materials
Employees will be trained to and must wear appropriate personal protective equipment in the vicinity of energized lasers or laboratory chemicals: gloves, laser googles, face shields, clean room garments, etc
Ability to operate fabrication and test equipment as defined by job
Lifting, bending and/or other physical requirements typical of experimental work in an optics laboratory environment will be required
Hourly Range: $23.75 - $54.50
