Come join a rapidly growing team as an Optical Engineer in Meta Reality Labs. You will be responsible for design, testing and productizing optical systems and sub-components that are core to delivering transformative experiences in Oculus AR/VR products.

You will join an agile team that is laser-focused on releasing imaging optics systems and sub-components that are fully hardened for high-volume manufacturing. We are seeking an engineer experienced with design and evaluation of imaging optics systems and sub-components; able to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and focused on execution while providing clear and effective communication to remove barriers across teams.

Optical Engineer Responsibilities

  • Conceptualize, design, develop, validate, prototype and develop imaging optics systems and sub-components for our current and next generation AR/VR products.

Design camera lenses for eye tracking and face tracking applications and perform sequential and non-sequential ray tracing to optimize lens and system performance.

Establish and document optical engineering specifications, including key performance metrics and test requirements for optical systems and components, through rigorous systems modeling to understand the customer-facing requirements and lens tolerance analysis based on assessing manufacturing capabilities.

Lead design validation, lab characterization and failure analysis of optical components and systems.

Drive the vendor for maturity in optical process, performance, yield, quality, reliability, and ramp new optical components and systems for full mass production readiness.

Contribute to the future optics technology roadmap.

Ability to operate in heavily cross functional and ambiguous work environments.

Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with internal cross-functional teams and with overseas vendors.

5+ years of experience in optical engineering.

Experience with optics fundamentals including lens design, aberration theory, image quality, illumination, radiometry and colorimetry, and experience with tolerance and thermal analysis.

Knowledge of optical grade plastic and glass materials, and various optical fabrication processes such as injection molding, grinding and polishing, precision glass molding and wafer level optics.

Hands-on experience using optical instruments such as white light/phase shift interferometer, spectrophotometer, scatterometer, and Image Master type MTF tester, etc.

Experience in Zemax and/or CodeV and experience with at least one non-sequential optical CAD (eg: Zemax, LightTools, Fred, ASAP).

Experience in programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or C++ .

Experience with large quantity data analysis and visualization.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in the field of Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering or related degree.
5+ years of experience in research or advanced optics development.

Experience with polarization optics, thin films (ARC, IRCF and bandpass filter) and NIR optics.

Experience in de-bugging and failure analysis of optical systems including knowledge of typical failure analysis equipment.

Experience with eye tracking technology or related fields and/or experience in developing optical systems for machine vision and computer vision applications.

Experience in taking high volume optical products from concept phase to shipping phase in the consumer electronics industry and proven experience in developing optical systems with multi-disciplinary teams.
