Your Specific Responsibilities:

This is a Molecular Microbiology position assigned to the Bureau of Public Health Laboratories, Molecular Epidemiology unit and PulseNet program in Jacksonville. The incumbent in this position must have the ability to plan, organize and work independently and effectively communicate with those within the organization regarding laboratory testing and program activities.

The incumbent is part of the team responsible for the proper operation on the laboratory side of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National PulseNet Program in the state of Florida.

Coordinates and performs molecular methods for the genetic characterization of bacterial isolates associated with food and water-borne disease outbreaks (including but not limited to genera Salmonella, Escherichia coli, Listeria, Shigella, Yersinia, Cronobacter and Campylobacter).

Performs daily nucleic acid extractions and sequencing of all PulseNet and HAI/AR (hospital acquired infections/antibiotic resistance) bacterial isolates and works closely with PulseNet certified laboratorians/data analysis staff and other trained laboratorians.

Tracks priority sequencing samples, manages specimen database, storage, and disposal.

Works with both Molecular and Microbiology laboratory staff to ensure that bacterial isolates scheduled to be tested are available and are sequenced without delay. This includes ensuring that isolates that do not pass QC parameters and need repeat testing are being re-cultured and re-tested, and that sample backlogs are addressed by increasing the frequency and load of testing.

Participates in the planning for and evaluation of new PulseNet-related instrumentation and test protocols and assists with the training of personnel in the laboratory when necessary.

Performs other related duties as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of molecular biology, microbiology.

Knowledge and understanding of laboratory policies, procedures, and protocols.

Skills in laboratory quality assurance and quality control.

Ability to communicate orally and in writing.

Qualifications:

Preferred - Bachelors in a Biological Science, 6 months experience or coursework experience acceptable, Current Florida Clinical Laboratory Public Health, Medical Laboratory Technologist/ Technician license, or the ability to get the license within 90 days.
