The Florida Department of Health (DOH) is responsible for the health and safety of all citizens and visitors to the state. As a public health agency, the Florida Department of Health must monitor the health status of Floridians, diagnose, and investigate health problems, and mobilize local communities to address health-related issues. The Florida Department of Health develops policies and plans that support health goals, enforce laws and regulations that protect the health of all residents and visitors, and link people to needed health care services. The Florida Department of Health also provides specialized assistance to pregnant women, infants, and children with special health care needs, regulates health care practitioners, and provides medical disability determinations.

Title of Position:

OPS Health Educator

Your Specific Responsibilities:

  • Receives referrals from Breastfeeding Peer Counselors to counsel pregnant and breastfeeding women on breastfeeding related issues in the clinic or by telephone.

  • Keeps accurate records of all contacts made with WIC clients.

  • Respects each mother by keeping her information strictly confidential.

  • Work within scope of practice to provide and document advanced breastfeeding education / support to help women successfully breastfeed. Provides clients with appropriate referrals.

  • Assists Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Coordinator with training of new Peer Counselors.

  • Facilitates and promotes positive breastfeeding initiatives with community partners, including hospitals and at outreach events.

  • Works with Breastfeeding Coordinator to facilitate WIC Breastfeeding Curriculum for new employees and assists with tracking staff progress through curriculum modules.

  • Assists with prenatal classes according to local agency lesson plans and protocols.

  • Attends breastfeeding training classes and supervised activities to increase skills and knowledge. Participates in WIC Program, Health Department and breastfeeding program meetings, in-service trainings, conferences, and workshops as assigned.

  • Completes mandatory trainings timely.

  • Accurately completes and submits all administrative records, including, but not limited to: Employee Activity Reports (EARs), timesheets, leave requests, travel, and monthly reports in a timely manner per Health Department policies and deadlines.

  • May assist WIC program in promoting breastfeeding peer counseling through special projects and duties as assigned.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned. Adheres to assigned work duties and work schedule as designated by supervisor.

  • If fluent in another language, may be required to assist with translation to ensure quality client services.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Is enthusiastic about breastfeeding and has a desire and ability to assist mothers from WIC targeted population.

  • Is skillful in professional telephone etiquette.

  • Has skill in typing and computer programs.

  • Has ability to plan, organize, manage time, meet deadlines, and work independently.

  • Has ability to community effectively.

  • Has ability to establish and maintain working relationships with others.

  • Has ability to maintain confidentiality of clients.

  • Work a minimum of 30 hours per week.

  • Have reliable transportation to use for work related purposes and a valid driver license to claim travel reimbursement.

Qualifications:

Minimum

  • Holds credential in lactation management. (e.g., International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant

  • IBCLC, Certified Lactation Counselor

  • CLC, or Certified Lactation Educator

  • CLE)

Preferred

  • Fluent reading, writing, and speaking both English and Spanish
