Fish & Wildlife Research Insitute in Gainesville location is looking for two seasonal Fish & Wildlife Technicians for the Eastern Black Rail project.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

BLACK RAIL Fish & Wildlife Technicians (2) needed (~April 24 - August 31, 20230 to conduct monitoring and research in central Florida for the Eastern Black Rail. Applicants should have previous field experience and a BS in wildlife or related field.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone hoping to gain experience in conservation biology working with an endangered species. Successful applicant will be a seasonal OPS employee with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Personnel hired will conduct call-broadcast point counts, habitat assessments, and deploy and retrieve autonomous recording units (ARUs) across multiple conservation lands in the Upper St.

Johns River Basin. Technicians may also participate in data entry/management and processing sound files. Position will require local travel between field sites and occasional visits to the main office in Gainesville, FL.

Must have a good driving record and be able to cope with long days in the sun and adverse weather conditions. Must be comfortable working in wetlands. Pay is $16/hour for one position and $18/hour for the second (pre-tax). Free housing provided in Titusville, FL.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Applicants must have previous field experience. Must have the ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.

Must be detail-oriented and careful with data collection. Experience driving and trailering atvs is highly preferred but not necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:

Two years of post-high school experience in wildlife, fisheries, environmental, ecological or related agriculture or construction or An associate of science degree from an accredited college in the field of wildlife, fisheries, environmental, ecological or agriculture studies.

PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should have previous field experience and a BS in wildlife or related field, experience with operating and loading ATVs and trailers, ability to work independently with minimal supervision, detail-oriented and careful with data collection. These additional skills are a plus: experience identifying birds or anurans by sound, experience with point count survey call-broadcast techniques, experience with passive monitoring techniques such as ARU or camera trap deployment.

This position requires the candidate to pass successfully a level 1 background check at no cost to the candidate.

WHAT IS OPS EMPLOYMENT? Other Personal Services (OPS) employment is a temporary employer/employee relationship used solely for accomplishing short term or intermittent tasks.

OPS employees do not fill established positions and may not be assigned the duties of any vacant authorized position. OPS employees are at-will employees and are subject to actions such as pay changes, changes to work assignment, and terminations at the pleasure of the agency head or designee.
