Description of duties: THIS IS AN OPS + POSITION. IT IS NOT CAREER SERVICE.

An exciting opportunity exists for a Fish and Wildlife Biologist to join a team of employees within the Wildlife and Habitat Management Section in managing the newly established Orange Hammock WMA in Sarasota County. FWC's Southwest Region is seeking a motivated applicant that is willing and able to work outdoors in a variety of conditions throughout the year in fulfillment of their job responsibilities.

Primary responsibilities include the restoration and maintenance of wildlife habitat by applying prescribed fire, mechanical treatments and exotic plant control throughout the area. Job duties will further include public hunt management, biological data collection, wildlife surveys, leading prescribed burn crews, infrastructure establishment and maintenance, and other various land management tasks as needed.

This position is also responsible for the development and periodic revision of long-range, comprehensive management plans, annual work plans, budget proposals, area regulations, and reports. Incumbent will also be working with other staff within the region to enhance wildlife habitat and promote compatible recreational use for the general public. Incumbent will also participate in team meetings, seminars, and workshops relating to wildlife resource management or other training opportunities.

Persons applying for this position should be comfortable working independently in the field as well as in a team setting, and have experience in prescribed burning, plant identification, and exotic plant control. The ability to operate ATVs and field equipment is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Incumbent must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to work well with team members and members of the public.

Other required knowledge, skills and abilities include:

  • knowledge of wildlife ecology, game management, wildlife and habitat surveying and inventory
  • knowledge and experience with the application of prescribed fire
  • knowledge and experience with chemical or mechanical control of vegetation
  • ability to identify common and imperiled species
  • ability to write technical reports
  • ability to operate outdoors under inclement weather conditions
  • ability to work productively unsupervised
  • knowledge of ArcGIS and GPS and its application
  • strong interpersonal skills to effectively interact with cooperators, coworkers, and constituents
  • skilled in use of Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Access, etc.)

Additional duties include operating, maintaining and repairing area equipment and vehicles including trucks, tractors, ATVs, and heavy equipment in accordance with manufacturer and industry recommendations. Incumbent also must possess the ability to troubleshoot the repairs of pumps, motors and heavy equipment. This position also assists biologists with surveying and monitoring of threatened and locally important species, resource inventories, and public hunt management. Assists in the planning, development and maintenance of projects facilitating public use including parking and road construction, culvert installation, trash pickup, building maintenance and fence, gate and sign construction and maintenance. Interacts professionally with the public and partners providing accurate information concerning wildlife, area conditions, rules and regulations.
