Opinion Writer

The Virginian-Pilot/Daily Press -- the largest news operation in Virginia, with coverage from Richmond to the Outer Banks of North Carolina -- seeks an experienced journalist with strong writing, reporting, analytical and digital skills to join its editorial board as an opinion writer. A successful applicant must be committed to serving readers by delivering enterprising opinion content with speed, accuracy, fairness and insight. He or she will help us grow audience through engaging and innovative new ways to present opinion content online. Comfort working with multiple publishing platforms and social media is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Serving as a member of the editorial board, helping evaluate issues and generating ideas that anticipate the flow of the news.

  • Producing well-organized editorials that are timely, provocative and help readers understand the issues that are most important to them and their communities.

  • Responding quickly to stories that engage our readers to provide more depth and context to the news.

  • Developing new and innovative ways of delivering digital content, including opinion videos.

  • Engaging our audience online (including social media, video, podcasts and other means), in person and elsewhere to deepen our connections and responsiveness to the community.

Qualifications

A college degree is required. At least two years' experience in daily journalism is preferred.

VIEW JOBS 2/25/2020 12:00:00 AM 2020-05-25T00:00 Overview Capstone Corporation is currently seeking a Training Objective Manager/Master Scenario Events List (MSEL) Writer as part of an Operational Level of War Training Team (OLW TT) to develop and run an exercise, and serve as observer/trainers that provides functional training while interacting directly with the training audience. In support of U.S. Fleet Forces Command (USFFC), the OLW TT provides operational level of war training to Maritime Operations Centers (MOC) at all Numbered Fleet Commands and Naval Component Command headquarters through the use of remote media, tailored workshops, academics, and exercises. This contract support position will assist USFFC in the execution of the MOC training and certification mission within the framework of the Chief of Naval Operations directed MOC training continuum. The MOC training continuum consists of planning conferences, training assist visits, sustainment training events, major training events, and in the case of certification a Performance Observation Event. Work will be performed and based at USFFC HQ in Norfolk, VA with travel to various locations to support training and exercise requirements. Responsibilities * Provides technical assistance in the development, design, execution, and assessment of a formal USN training and exercise program designed to train operational level MOC and tactical level CTF staffs in naval and joint warfare competencies across the range of military operations. * Maintains electronically the exercise / event related data and information needed to produce the joint exercise life cycle deliverables. * Interacts with senior military and government leadership to develop operational level training scenarios and exercise plans. * Interacts, on a routine basis, with CCMDs, other services, and USN tactical training partners to develop complimentary training and exercise scenarios and events. * Develops a MOC MSEL training and exercise database that promotes the sustainability, flexibility, functional commonality, and interoperability of core naval tasks among the MOCs and other USN subordinate staffs/units and comparable joint organizations. * Ensures MOC scenario and MSEL development conform to and adhere to Navy and Joint standards and requirements for exercise development and execution. * Coordinates with individual MOCs to establish mission and functional specific training events based on limited vignettes to support team and cell training to enhance the readiness levels of the MOC based on identified deficiencies or commander's guidance using established manning, training and equipment standards per OPNAV-M 3500.42. * Develops, guides, tracks, and tailors OPFOR coordination, and efforts to meet the supported fleet and Lead Exercise Planner's requirements. All Maritime OPFOR shall provide advice and guidance on OPFOR replication, capabilities, and limitations to the fleet and Lead Exercise Planner. * Provides USN JSAF and joint M&S systems knowledge and experience to ensure USN operational capabilities are accurately and sufficiently represented in CCMD/Joint exercise M&S architecture to support USN operational level training objectives. * Conducts operational integration of M&S planning efforts for the scenario, MSELs, distributed simulation systems, networks, C4I systems and related infrastructure and interfaces used to support Navy and Joint Training, including integration of the required exercise elements to meet the event objectives in support of designated training and exercise events. Basic Qualifications Minimum education and years of experience: * Bachelor's degree. * Five (5) years of experience with military operations. Five (5) years of modeling & simulation (M&S) experience in Operational Level of War (OLW) exercises/Fleet Synthetic Training/service equivalent training. * Five (5) years of scenario development and master scenario events list (MSEL) writing experience. Minimum qualifications: * Trained and capable of serving as joint semi-automated forces (JSAF) operator during testing and exercise execution events. * Proficiency with Microsoft Office Word, Powerpoint, and Excel. * Experience with joint training information management system (JTIMS).
