Ophthalmic Tech

Job Description

Responsible for assisting in the care, treatment, and education of ocular conditions and disease with the patient. An ophthalmic tech works with the ophthalmologist to provide patient care by performing many different eye-related clinical functions. These may include taking histories, performing various procedures and diagnostic tests, and preparing patient to see the doctor. The ophthalmic tech provides the ophthalmologist with important information to help diagnose and treat the patients.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting and involves frequent telephone contact, as well as face-to-face communication with patients. Interactions with others in constant and interruptive. There is possible exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, bodily fluids, and other conditions common to medical practice. Varied activities including walking, bending, reaching, lifting (up to 30 pounds), stooping, assisting patients and sitting for extended periods of time may occur. Also, occasional stress from multiple responsibilities.

Job Responsibilities

  • Represent MMC in a courteous and professional manner

  • Be at your workstation on time and prepared to start the day.

  • Email communication is utilized in this department for important messages and updates. Check emails daily and utilize teams to efficiently communicate with other team members throughout the day.

  • Be flexible in scheduled times. Starting times as early as 7:30.

  • Meet or exceed patient, doctor, and staff expectations through a cooperative, teamwork approach

  • Keep your work area and the clinic clean

  • Be knowledgeable of and adhere to all HIPAA and OSHA guidelines.

  • Be knowledgeable of and adhere to all MMC policies and procedures.

  • With instruction, perform other duties as required or assigned

Required Skills

  • Obtains medical histories from patient.

  • Administers diagnostic test as directed by doctor.

  • Measures and records visual acuity.

  • Administers eye medications.

  • Maintains optical and surgical instruments.

  • Assisting the Ophthalmologist in office minor surgical procedures.

  • Set up, stock, and equip exam and procedure rooms.

  • Sterilize and clean rooms and equipment after each use.

  • Notify patients of test results as instructed by the physician.

  • Ability to be cross-trained to cover scheduling surgeries and helping answer incoming calls.

  • Assist patients in helping them from the waiting room to exam room.

  • Follow up on tasks/MMC portal messages daily.

  • Ability to follow physicians orders, communicate with patients in supportive manner and maintain professional manner.

  • Ability to assess the needs of patients and department and respond accordingly.

  • Ability to work in a team approach toward providing quality patient care.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks at one time, ability to be flexible and follow detailed instructions.

  • Ability to learn how to operate ophthalmic equipment. This includes Sonomed A-scan, IOL Master, Auto-refractor, Automated Lensometer, Zeiss OCT, Oculus Pentecam, Humphrey's Visual Field, Amsler grid, Ishihara's test for color blindness, and glare test.

Education/Experience Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Experience preferred but not required
