Responsibilities

  • Conduct preliminary testing, vision history screening, glasses neutralization and visual fields

  • Assist provider with minor surgical procedures in office

  • History taking, ocular history, family history, systemic illness, medications, allergies, history of partially-sighted patient, visual acuity's, color vision testing, lensometry, stereopsis, exophthalmometry, Amsler grid, Schirmer tests, evaluate pupils, ocular dressing and shields, assisting patients, tonometry, instrument maintenance, ocular motility, retinal thickness analyzation (RTA)

  • Assist provider with surgical in-office procedures and foreign body removals

  • Schedule surgeries and get prior authorizations and referrals

  • Conduct pre-surgery testing

  • Conduct patient education, show videos for surgical procedures

  • Dispensing contact lens per provider prescriptions

  • Provide patient contact lens insertion and removal training

  • Maintain diagnostic contact lens inventory by organizing, cleaning and performing counts as directed

  • Order and maintain ophthalmic supplies, medications and ointments

  • Clean and sterilize equipment

Education

  • COA certification and minimum of two years experience working in a medical setting or two years Ophthalmic Assistant program

To assist in the delivery of eye care as directed by the eye care provider (i.e., ophthalmologist/optometrist) and to deliver these services in a professional, cost effective and timely manner. Accountabilities: 1. Room patients for provider and perform the following procedures/assessments as indicated: * Obtain patient history. * Neutralize present glasses prescription. * Obtain visual acuity. * Perform extraocular muscle assessment. * Perform confrontation visual fields. * Perform pupil testing. * Perform color vision testing. 2. Perform stereopsis testing as needed. 3. Perform amsler grid testing as needed 4. Perform tonometry. 5. Instill pharmaceutical drops as needed 6. Perform visual fields. 7. Obtain keratometry measurements as needed 8. Coordinate work-ins, walk-ins, patient phone calls, etc. with reception staff and eye care providers. 9. Maintain effective patient flow. 10. Assist provider with patient education as needed 11. Set up and assist provider in minor surgery procedures. 12. Maintain and order supplies. 13. Schedule surgery and explain pre-operative instructions. 14. Clean and maintain all instruments and exam rooms. 15. Contact Lens Duties include: * Maintain and stock diagnostic trial lens and starter kits * Insert and remove trial lenses as directed * Verify, clean and polish rigid contact lenses (requires ability to use radiuscope) * Order patient lenses and notify patient when lenses arrive promptly. * Monitor lenses "to be picked up" for non-pickups; send lenses back for credit after two (2) months. * Instruct new contact lenses wearers on insertion, removal and care of contact lenses. * Ability to discuss contact lens types (including relative advantages and prices) and service fees. Collect applicable fees for contact lenses and services. 16. Perform other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications: * High School graduate or equivalent. * A minimum of one-year experience working as an Ophthalmic/Optometric Assistant in an Optometry or Ophthalmology setting. * Must be professional, punctual, and dependable. * Must possess good communication skills. * Must be able to interact with various types of patients and staff Preferred Qualifications: * Formal Ophthalmic/Optometric training from an accredited technical or vocational school. Physical Requirements: Must possess manual dexterity, good vision and be self-mobile. Ability to read, write and speak English.
