In an Operator Trainee role, learning responsibility for operating machines to ensure that quality standards are consistently me t, the line meets schedule attainment and line efficiency standards, the mechanical operations run smoothly and the line workers are directed properly.


The Operator Trainee is in training in the following tasks required to become a successful Operator:

  • Ensure meat, dates, tape, labels and other supplies are correct according to product specifications.

  • Ensure efficient packaging by setting up work stations correctly and effectively.

  • Encourage team to be ready to start on time in the morning, after breaks and lunch.

  • Perform product quality and QA checks to eliminate or reduce product waste or rework, these may include but are not limited to hourly weight or count checks, oxygen level tests, metal detection, or blade inspection.

  • Maximize quality and efficiency by adjusting machines registration, sealing temperature, speed, gas levels, and slicing width.

  • Maintain current records by filling out required paperwork correctly and completely throughout the run.

  • Able to load and thread film on packaging lines.

  • Performs metal detection.

  • Prepare work area by assembling and setting up work stations.


  • High School or equivalent preferred

  • 6 months general production experience required

  • Machine operator experience preferred

  • Pallet Jack experience preferred

Industry: Aerospace/Defense Products & Services Number of Employees: 250 Job Overview Title: Shot Peen Operator / 3rd Shift Job Family: Operations Reports to: Production Supervisors Works with: Production, Materials Location: Kent, WA Type: Full Time Job Summary Employees in this position use a variety of methods to process parts in preparation for plating and other coatings. They shot peen and glass bead peen, including automated, manual and I.D. peening and inspection. The operators perform operations in accordance with Military and OEM specifications. The individual in this role will be considered an operator trainee until able to pass certification testing. Responsibilities * Attention to quality of product * Review customer and Hytek paperwork for instructions * As a new operator, must follow technique card and instructions from more experienced operator to process parts * Work closely with higher level operators to complete work and prioritize tasks * Know the limitations of Type I and/or Type II shot peening and identify areas requiring manual and ID peening * Determining & applying masking per customer supplied documentation (drawing, PO, etc.) requirements & perform fadeout peening * Preparation of parts prior to peening * Machine set-up requirements * Able to operate Type I and/or Type II shot peening machines to produce shot intensities as specified on the engineering drawings * Be able to manipulate the shot stream to peen part surfaces, radii, holes and entrant surfaces to obtain the intensities specified on the engineering drawing * Use tooling and fixtures, when applicable * Be familiar with the material properties of aluminum and steel with regards to saturation shot peening * Know how to use an Almen strip, know the different types of Almen strips and their relationship to one another * Know how to use and read the Almen gage and calculate pre-bow compensation * Know the effects of shot velocity on intensity & why hard shot is required in some cases * Saturation determination, including development of multiple saturation curves and their significance * Coverage attainment and peening time determination * Adequate representation of a part with Part Verification Tool (Almen strip) * Inspection: Knowledge of the expected response and appearance of the material being peened and using magnifying glass to verify coverage. * Recognition of machine malfunction when they occur and corrective action, when required * Prepare, understand, and documentation of shot peen technique card * Shot size (using sieves), shape (deformed, fracture, broken) type, control and cleanliness * Use of Fluorescent tracer * Knowledge of pre and post cleaning surface finish requirements * Be familiar with Quality Assurance requirements & rework procedures * Be familiar with engineering drawing notations regarding shot peening * Be familiar with the safety precautions & know how to avoid injury to personnel. * Actively participate in continuous improvement activities to drive positive change in productivity, delivery, and service. * Maintain the highest ethical standards, even when challenged from above. Qualifications * Must be a US Person and able to provide proof of US Person status upon hiring. * Ability to pass a written and practical test that covers surface condition requirements, operating procedures, and inspection techniques. Certification required after successful completion of training and testing in the qualifications. * Ability to train others * Ability to write technique cards * Ability to use/learn Lean Tools and techniques to solve tactical and strategic problems and issues arising in this position. * Proven ability to work independently and in a team. * Excellent accuracy with a strong attention to detail and demonstrated teamwork attitude. * Ability to multi task effectively. * Ability to communicate well. * May be required to join the FAA Repair Station program, including the FAA Drug & Alcohol random selection pool. Compensation and Benefits Operator Trainee positions begin at $14.75/hour. There is an additional $0.50/hour for 2nd shift and $0.75/hour for 3rd shift.
