The Water Resources Program  within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill an Operations Unit Supervisor (Environmental Specialist 5) position. This position is located in our Central Region Office (CRO) in Union Gap, WA. Upon hire, you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station.

The Operations Unit is a new unit for the region. The successful applicant will work with the Section Manager to transition staff from other units into the new unit and help to build that team's cohesiveness.

This position is a great opportunity for someone who is detail and process oriented and enjoys helping others navigate change. In this role, you will be at the forefront of modernization of our water right permitting process and will become intimately involved in the varied and complex work of the Water Resources Program. You will gain supervisor experience while leading a team of Water Resources professionals working on database management, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping, water use metering, customer service, and well construction tracking as well as working with other supervisors and regions.

Tele-work options for this position: This position will be eligible for up to a 40% tele-work schedule.

 The position must be able to come into the office for meetings, as needed. What makes this role unique?

In this role, you will supervise staff working on a variety of projects with varying skillsets. The position will need to, over time, become knowledgeable of each of those positions to provide guidance, quality control, and prioritization for those positions, help them navigate changes to technology and process, and onboard new staff as needed.

What you will do:

  • Work closely with headquarters to become familiar with upcoming changes to technology and processes so as to successfully assist staff to be prepared for and navigate those changes.

  • Provide training and guidance to staff throughout the entire Section on proper use of existing databases, GIS, various meeting and work platforms, software, etc.

  • Successfully communicate and collaborate with other units, regions, and headquarters to provide smoother transitions through change, better communication between staff, and improved consistency of our work with other regions.

  • Provide mentoring to your staff, perform performance reviews, lead staff meetings, develop opportunities for staff learning, develop directions and priorities, ensure high quality and consistent work outcomes, fill vacancies as needed, and oversee day to day activities and work products.

  • Work with the Section Manager and other unit supervisors to build annual work plans and participate in other regional and statewide strategic planning efforts.

Required Qualifications:

Years of required experience indicated below are full-time equivalent years. Full-time equivalent experience means that any experience where working hours were less than 40 hours per week will be prorated in order to meet the equivalency of full-time.

We would calculate this by looking at the total hours worked per week, divide this by 40, and then multiply by the total number of months worked. Examples of the proration calculations are:

  • 30 hours worked per week for 20 months: (30/40) x 20 months = 15 months full-time equivalent
  • 20 hours worked per week for 12 months: (20/40) x 12 months = 6 months full-time equivalent

Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, education, and volunteer experience. See below for how you may qualify.

A total of Ten (10) years of experience and/or education as described below:

  • Professional level Experience in: Environmental analysis or control or environmental planning.

  • Education: Involving a major study in environmental, physical, or one of the natural sciences, environmental planning or other allied field.
