Umbra Lab, Inc. (Umbra) is a technology company which builds next-generation space systems. Umbra is launching an unrivaled constellation of space-based radar satellites with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) capabilities, to produce all weather day-night imagery with sub-meter resolution for low cost distribution via an integrated web platform. We are a bold, experienced team of developers, engineers, product specialists, and other professionals working to aggressively expand the state-of-the-art for commercial remote sensing.

We are looking for a talented, mission-driven professional to work closely with a multidisciplinary engineering team as an Operations Systems Engineer, developing next-generation space radar systems. The individual filling this position will work closely with the Satellite Systems Engineer and provide operational insights and guidance to the flight and ground software development teams. Final scope of responsibilities will be dependent on experience.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with engineering team to support full life cycle of satellite design, launch and operations of next- generation space radar system
  • Work with engineering team to develop on-orbit CONOPS and procedures
  • Provide operational expertise to ground and flight engineering and software development teams
  • Interface with vendors as the technical representative and subcontracts manager
  • Develop and maintain general requirements and specifications for space, ground, and launch segments
  • Perform system level analyses to support mission objectives
  • Prepare engineering documentation, reports, test plans and contribute directly to payload and space vehicle assembly, integration, and test

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in relevant STEM discipline
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to spacecraft systems engineering tasks
  • Experience working with and contributing to multi-disciplinary engineering teams
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic and fast-paced development environment

Desired Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Astronautical Engineering or relevant technical discipline
  • 2+ years of relevant professional experience with a significant portion made up of on-orbit operations
  • Recent experience with satellite AI&T and on-orbit operations
  • Experience in C / C++ and Python or Matlab
  • Professional knowledge of Satellite Toolkit (STK)

The radar systems engineer will work with a diverse group of hardware, software, embedded, signal processing and RF engineers to enhance performance, quality of service, and manufacturability of the Umbra synthetic aperture radar, SAR payload. The Radar Systems Engineer will also work as an individual contributor to establish radar architectures for next generation payload radar capabilities.</p><p><strong>Requirements</strong></p><p><strong>Key Responsibilities</strong></p><ul> <li>Develop and maintain radar math models and tools as required to support space and airborne radar design and operation.</li> <li>Support definition of radar system and technology development strategies</li> <li>Working with an interdisciplinary team to lead the design, support manufacturing, test, and operation of space-based SAR and MTI radars</li> <li>Develop and execute test plans and procedures to test and validate radar system performance</li> <li>Support radar waveform design and digital signal processing</li> <li>Lead on-orbit operation, optimization and automation of radar payloads</li> </ul><p><strong>Basic Qualifications</strong></p><ul> <li>Ability to derive fundamental radar performance relationships from first principles</li> <li>Evaluate radar system performance using first principles and statistical signal processing fundamentals</li> <li>Drive the radar design process starting with high-level conceptual and architectural discussions through model development, implementation, and performance validation</li> <li>Experience developing Synthetic Aperture Radar systems</li> <li>A minimum of 5 years experience in radar systems design, integration and test</li> <li>Excellent communication and documentation and ability to collaborate with other engineering disciplines</li> <li>Highly motivated team player that is comfortable working in a dynamic and fast-paced development environment</li> </ul><p><strong>Desired Qualifications</strong></p><ul> <li>Master's Degree in a relevant technical discipline such as physics or electrical engineering</li> <li>Experience with operation of space-based radar</li> <li>Experience with radar related microwave and antenna systems</li> </ul><p><strong>Benefits</strong></p><ul> <li>Flexible Vacation / Paid Time Off</li> <li>Medical, Dental, Vision, 401(k)</li> <li>Stock Options</li> </ul> Umbra Santa Barbara CA
