OPERATION MECHANIC (HVAC, Utility First Responder)

Job Description and Functions

Virginia Natural Gas


  • The Operations Mechanic is a field employee who travels to customer location to perform services involving the customer's use of natural gas and propane. The employee works alone the vast majority of the time.
  • The mechanic position is an emergency first responder working for a public utility that is required to cover standby after regular working hours and holidays.

  • The mechanic will be required to work during regional events (including natural disasters and severe weather) and is deemed essential personnel to maintain the safe and reliable natural gas distribution system in the community.

  • The mechanic must be available to work overtime, after hours, cover shifts, during system outages and be willing to travel within the Virginia Natural Gas service territory based on the needs of the company.

  • The mechanic deals with emergencies such as the escape of natural gas, uncontrolled operation of an appliance burning natural gas and the improper operation of an appliance that may result in the release of carbon monoxide into a living space.

  • The mechanic is a customer service focused position.

  • The mechanic will turn gas meters on and off at the customer's request and relight and check the operation of appliances that have been turned off for any reason.

  • The mechanic will build new gas meter sets and repair existing meter sets as needed.

  • The mechanic will make limited/minor repairs to customer appliances, replace fittings and install customer fuel line.

  • The mechanic will exchange gas meters that aren't operating properly or require replacement due to age or any other reason.

  • The mechanic interacts with residential, commercial and industrial customers, animals, weather conditions and the general public on the roadways of the territory.

  • The mechanic will work directly with local first responders (Fire Departments, Police Dept etc.) and work directly with local building codes and compliance inspectors.

  • The mechanic will be required to pull after hours call duty for emergencies. This will include overnight and weekends.

  • The mechanic will be required to take operators qualification tests and training.

Exposure to short-term, low concentrations of natural gas and/or carbon monoxide during leak/CO investigations

Potential exposure to various levels of noise form construction equipment which may require ear protection

Use of mobile data terminal in vehicle and completion of paperwork during normal course of the day

Use of Probing Rod in soil or asphalt during leak investigation.
