Job purpose

The Operations Manager will provide input to planning activities and is an advocate of cost reduction efforts and quality improvement via fulfillment and distribution operations. Provide input and manage the fulfillment and distribution strategy to support multiple services/products.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Manage a distribution and fulfillment site.
  • Responsible for meeting financial targets (Key measurements and benchmarks distribution & labor costs)
  • Provides leadership, support, motivates, directs and retains high caliber staff.
  • Promotes "total customer satisfaction" (delivery, quality etc.) within all Operations teams
  • Identifies and solves critical operational problems.
  • Determines departmental staffing requirements as part of Operational planning/budgeting.
  • Initiate advanced fulfillment and logistics programs to improve operations.
  • Lead the development, acquisition and validation of new processes for distribution, fulfillment and logistics to meet business goals.
  • Integrate the technology, quality, purchasing and logistics functions to support services, cost and process excellence.
  • Provide leadership in the development of an effective organization and its members
  • Creating a talent and labor management process in coordination with GM to ensure that the right resources are in place.
  • Develop standard operating procedures and best practices in terms of material management and contract performance monitoring in order to optimize cost, quality and delivery time.


  • Demonstrated leader with at least 3 years progressive management experience in a 3PL environment is preferred.
  • Ecommerce or direct to consumer/ business (D2C/B2C) highly preferred.
  • Experience in a fast pace, high volume unit pick fulfillment DC environment.
  • Ability to understand and thrive in a high volume work environment during extremely busy peaks season while executing multiple projects simultaneously. Must be proactive, numbers driven and a good anticipated planner.
  • Hands-on strong problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency developing metrics planning (good knowledge of spreadsheets)
  • Knowledge of Warehouse Management Systems a plus

In 2021, we opened a new company Headquarters and cutting-edge, fully automated production facility in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. In 2022, we announced that we are constructing the world’s largest vertical farm, a 250,000 sqft facility in Northeast Pennsylvania, opening in 2023. More and larger farms are in the works. Our mission is to heal the broken food system and reconnect eaters with flavorful and nutritious local food.</p><p>In this role, you will be responsible for operations of our recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). The core objective of aquaculture at Upward Farms is the production of nutrients for our aquaponically grown leafy greens, however fish will also be sold commercially. You will report to the General Manager of the regional farm who will provide guidance on operational needs. The Aquaculture Director will assist you in production planning and risk mitigation.</p><p>This role will report to the General Manager of the regional farm.</p>Location<p>This is a role that is in-person, located at our new facility in Northeast Pennsylvania. </p><p><strong>Success</strong></p><p>Success in this role will mean managing operations of the aquaculture production systems efficiently and as autonomously as is feasible. This includes developing and executing an accurate production plan to serve the business goals, anticipating fish health risks, and quickly and effectively responding to any emergent issues. </p><p><strong>Responsibilities</strong><br></p><p><em>Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) Operations</em></p><ul><li>Manage operations of all production systems including water quality monitoring and equipment performance.</li><li>Coordinate equipment cleanings and environmental monitoring in accordance with the facility’s sanitation schedule.</li><li>Maintain compliance of all biosecurity procedures.</li><li>Coordinate fingerling procurement and delivery.</li><li>Manage production related activities including fish transfers, grading, and counting.</li><li>Coordinate fish processing activities including harvest, packing, and distribution.</li><li>Administer the fish health plan and ensure compliance with all fish welfare policies.</li><li>Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).</li><li>Maintain all related operational logs and records.</li><li>Comply with all city, county, state, federal, or private / third party agricultural / industrial, quality assurance, and safety policies.</li><li>Be on-call as part of a scheduled rotation across colleagues to address emergencies at the facility during nights or weekends.</li></ul><p><em>Management and Communication</em></p><ul><li>Collaborate with members of Upward Farms’ management team to ensure operation objectives are achieved.</li><li>Manage execution of bioplan for hybrid striped bass production in a recirculating system.</li><li>Provide reports for the Aquaculture Director and site General Manager as needed. </li><li>Lead a team of RAS technicians </li><li>Communicate appropriately as required with Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and other regulatory agencies.</li></ul><p><strong>Requirements</strong></p><ul><li>Bachelor’s degree in aquaculture, biology, fisheries, marine science or related field.</li><li>Minimum of 5 years working with commercial aquaculture production systems including a minimum of 3 years with RAS.</li><li>Experience managing a team of employees.</li><li>Excellent oral and written communication skills.</li><li>Strong work ethic and detail-oriented. </li><li>Effective time management and organizational skills.</li><li>Work independently as well as in a team environment.</li><li>Ability to quickly problem-solve and make sound decisions.</li><li>Proficient computer skills, including experience with Google Suite, Slack.</li><li>Must be able to lift materials weighing up to 50 lbs.</li></ul><p><strong>Preferred Skills + Experience</strong></p><ul><li>Master’s degree in aquaculture, biology, fisheries, marine science or related field. </li><li>At least 5 years of experience with commercial recirculating aquaculture systems.</li></ul><p><strong>Benefits</strong></p><p>We offer a dynamic work environment and benefits that include:</p><ul><li>Aetna Medical, Aetna and MetLife Dental, and Aetna Vision insurance; FSA/HSA plans; and HIPAA-compliant health advocates.
