SUMMARY

The Operations Leadership Development Program was developed to build future operations and business leaders. The program offers talented engineering and supply chain candidates with real-world experience and the foundational skills necessary to become a successful Operations Leader in our company.

Although the program duration and assignments vary, the program is typically 2-3 years with a minimum of 3 rotations. Candidates will be placed in assignments that are relevant to their major based on needs of the business.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Manufacturing Engineer

Manufacturing Engineers are the focal point of the manufacturing process as they interact with all support functions and external resources to ensure the production process is streamlined and maintained without interruption. Typical responsibilities are ownership of process improvements, supporting daily operations, new product introduction to operations. You will gain experience in process layout, CNC programming, standard work / implementation of flow, fixture design, supplier qualification, and capacity planning.

Quality Engineer

Front line professional with direct accountability for product and process Quality in a value stream team environment. In this role the associate is responsible supporting daily operations, process improvements, and new product introductions. You will gain experience developing inspection / testing methods, maintaining / submitting APQP documentation, disposition of non-conforming material, completing corrective action reports, and maintaining adherence to the IATF16949 quality system.

Production Supervisor

Associates in this leadership role are responsible for managing both the production process and the skilled workforce that puts the product out the door every day. The associate will be responsible for coordinating production requirements, building the best team, training associates on standard manufacturing processes, and ensuring all Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost (SQDC) objectives are met. You will gain valuable leadership experience by managing a diverse union workforce of dedicated associates, implementing lean conversion initiatives in accordance with the Altra Business System (ABS), and facilitating the communication and coordination of activities between the manufacturing process and support functions.

Buyer/Planner

The associate will be assigned to a value stream team and be responsible for procuring direct material while ensuring the continuity of supply required for daily production. You will gain experience in production scheduling, ensuring proper inventory levels in a pull environment, expediting deliveries, and issuing purchase orders to qualified suppliers. You may also be involved in strategic initiatives such as supplier selection and preferred supplier development.

Commodity Specialist

Primary responsibility will be developing supplier relationships, identifying and achieving total cost reductions, and managing strategic projects for a group of commodities. You will execute the sourcing funnel process, resource strategic parts to new suppliers, support Engineering in new product development, and coordinate quotations. You may also be involved in managing through serious supply chain issues and shortages.

Continuous Improvement Specialist

The Altra Business System Specialist (ABSS) directly supports our efforts to drive a culture of continuous improvement. This role has the responsibility for managing kaizen events and other improvement activities as necessary through Policy Deployment, Model Value stream, and Daily Management. The ABSS will work with the ABS Leader in developing the organization's breadth and depth in ABS tools with a focus on building problem-solving capability.

Critical Competencies

  • Creative and progressive thinker with excellent interpersonal skills (positive, persuasive, motivating) and ability to communicate effectively with others at all levels in the organization, in verbal or written form.

  • Ability to analyze problems, propose solutions, test theories, research alternatives and research conclusions. Skilled in collaborative problem solving.

  • Experience leading projects. Organized with the ability to prioritize activities to achieve short and long-term goals and objectives.

  • Experience with lean manufacturing concepts including standard work, variation reduction, and pull systems (kanban).

  • Able to work in a fast paced, challenging, and team environment.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required in an Engineering discipline or Supply Chain Management.

  • Excellent academic record (GPA: 3.0 or greater required)

  • Co-op, internship, or other work experience preferred

Physical Demand and Work Environment:

Jacobs Vehicle Systems (JVS) is a heavy-duty manufacturing facility. As such, all employees are required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in designated areas within the facility.

Given the scope of responsibility and assignment, employees may be exposed to any of the following conditions:

Extensive sitting or standing; climbing, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping and other substantial movements for up to 8 hours per day, not including potential voluntarily overtime; loud noises; exposure to oils, coolants, fumes, odors and other potential hazardous chemicals and materials. Employees are required to have visual acuity to support the basic functions of the role as defined above.
