Job Description:

The Operations Health & Safety (H&S) Leader is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining comprehensive health, safety, and environmental (H&S) programs for a network of distribution centers and a transportation fleet. They will ensure compliance with relevant regulations and McKesson Corporate H&S policies, mitigate risks, and promote a culture of health and safe practices.

In this role, the Operations H&S Leader will conduct assessments, provide guidance and support, monitor compliance, maintain documentation, and develop and deliver safety training. They will also conduct investigations to protect organizational assets and drive continuous improvement in safety performance. Additionally, they will be responsible for responding to contingency events, including emergency management, and addressing safety-sensitive Department of Transportation (DOT) matters.

Collaboration with cross-functional teams, including McKesson Corporate EHS team, staying updated on emerging safety trends and new industry technologies, and engaging with external stakeholders will be crucial aspects of the role. The Operations H&S Leader will also mentor other safety professionals.

Reporting to the Vice President of Operations, who oversees 3,500 Warehouse Team Members, 1,000 Delivery Professionals, 19 Forward DC's, 3 Redistribution Centers, and 79 Cross Dock locations, the Operations H&S Leader plays a critical role in ensuring the well-being and safety of employees, contractors, and the organization.

Conduct Assessments & Mitigate Risk:

  • Identify potential H&S hazards within the network through data analysis, inspections, and collaboration with teams.

  • Conduct risk assessments to evaluate the level of risk associated with specific activities, processes, or equipment.

  • Develop and implement strategies to mitigate identified risks, including cross-functional alignment with other Business Units to address areas of opportunity.

  • Collaborate with other teams to ensure effective implementation of risk mitigation measures.

  • Proactively seek out opportunities to leverage AI or other types of technology to innovate H&S practices.

Provide strategic leadership and guidance to leadership team:

  • Act as an advisor and liaison between local operations, transportation teams, regional management, and corporate EHS leadership.

  • Communicate safety initiatives, concerns, and progress within the network.

  • Facilitate open communication channels for employees to report safety issues or concerns.

  • Provide guidance and support to address safety-related challenges and promote a culture of safety throughout the organization.

  • Incorporate leading safety technologies within the network to further research and record opportunities and prevent incidents.

Accountable for compliance and regulations:

  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations (OSHA, DOT, etc.) and McKesson Corporate EH&S policy standards are met within the network.

  • Conduct regular audits, inspections, and assessments to ensure facilities are adhering to H&S protocols.

  • Share expertise on relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards.

  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to address compliance gaps and implement corrective actions as needed.

Documentation, Reporting and Governance:

  • Maintain accurate records of H&S activities, incidents, training sessions, inspections, and audits within the network.

  • Continuously seek opportunities to improve safety performance based on data analysis and identified trends.

  • Develop a 3-5-year aspirational plan to reduce injuries across the business unit, including key goals and tactics.

  • Prepare regular reports on safety performance metrics and trends for the VP of Operations.

  • Utilize data to identify proactive measures to prevent accidents and incidents.

Own and direct safety and emergency preparedness training program(s):

  • Implement and deliver comprehensive safety training programs to employees, contractors, and stakeholders.

  • Develop and conduct annual train-the-trainer sessions to ensure consistent and effective safety training.

  • Review and update emergency response plans for various potential scenarios, such as fires, natural disasters, or workplace incidents.

  • Assess the effectiveness of training provided and make improvements as necessary to enhance safety preparedness.

Investigate, document and track incidents and accidents:

  • Thoroughly investigate recordable accidents and fleet incidents, analyzing root causes and identifying contributing factors.

  • Develop a comprehensive program to collect evidence, interview witnesses, and analyze data to determine causes and prevent reoccurrence.

  • Report incidents to relevant authorities and maintain accurate records.

  • Implement effective corrective actions to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

Our Base Pay Range for this position

$139,800 - $233,000
