Engineering Registered Apprenticeship This is a 4 year training program for those interested in becoming a Licensed Engineer. This program will include 4 years of annual on the job training, completion of classes through Des Moines Area Community College that are paid for by UPH-DM and will also include a wage progression each year. Wages begin at $11.85 and the wage at completion of the RA will be $19.50.
Shall be responsible for the safe and efficient operations, installation, inspection, preventive maintenance, routine maintenance and repairs of, but not limited to, mechanical and electrical equipment, i.e., steam boilers, all HVAC systems, all refrigeration systems, emergency generators, cogeneration equipment, utility distribution systems, all chilled water equipment, building automation systems, pneumatic tube system, buildings, plumbing, sanitary, medical gasses, sprinkler systems, and fire alarm systems. Completion of this work will contribute positively to the safety, health and comfort of the patients, visitors, and employees of UnityPoint Health Des Moines.

(years 1-4) Performs minor repairs on buildings, building and cabinet hardware. (years 1-4) Displays considerable initiative and judgment involved in determining extent of repairs as may be required on all equipment and buildings selecting appropriate materials, and utilizing the most effective methods, techniques and procedures when required to complete job assignments. (years 1-4) Cooperates with Director, POM Supervisor and other employees to maintain equipment, parts and supplies. (years 1-4) Observe and practice accepted procedures in the care and use of equipment and tools and observe safety regulations and practices. (years 1-4) Communicates with Facilities Director, POM Supervisor and co-workers to achieve understanding in a positive manner. (years 1-4) May be required to work any day of the week including Saturdays, Sundays, and Holidays. (years 1-4) Performs functions other than described due to extenuating circumstances. (years 1-4) This position may be assigned a specific mission to address in an emergency situation to assist in disaster response and recovery as part of the IH-DM Hospital Emergency Incident Command System. Situations of a critical nature may require an individual to perform multiple tasks until additional support can be obtained. (years 1-4) Performs minor repairs on electrical and mechanical items. (years 2-4) Monitor and complete minor repairs on the pneumatic tube system. (years 3-4) Perform repairs and preventative maintenance on emergency generators, cogeneration equipment and utility distribution systems. (years 3-4) Performs repairs and preventive maintenance on the building automation systems. Knowledgeable of sprinkler and fire alarm systems. (years 3-4) Install new electrical and mechanical equipment as necessary. (years 3-4) Performs repairs and preventative maintenance on HVAC Systems. (year 4) Performs repairs and preventive maintenance on chilled water and hot water heating systems. (year 4) Makes recommendations to Director and POM Supervisor regarding desired changes in operation and maintenance procedures. (year 4) May be called during off-duty hours. (year 4)

High School diploma/equivalent required. Previous hospital experience desirable but not mandatory.
Valid Driver's license required. First Class Engineer's license required within 1 year of completing the Plant Operations Engineer Apprenticeship. Must have basic knowledge of had tools and equipment used in industrial or commercial operations.
