Job Description:

Old Dominion Freight Line is currently recruiting for an Operations Clerk to join the OD family Culture. This clerk will successfully work directly with our city drivers and sets appointments with current customers or clients. This position will assist dispatchers by taking calls, assigning drivers to routes, and processing a driver's paperwork. Answering phone calls and writing emails in an efficient and effective way is a must in this fast paced environment. During a shift the operations clerk will also support any office duties such as customer service, tracing shipments, and transfer phone calls to appropriate individuals. On a daily basis an operations clerk will work with customers and find a solution to their needs.


  • Answer phones.

  • Process information through our AS400/SAP system database such as appointments and be able to use other software/programs to monitor freight.

  • On a daily basis deal with city drivers and handle their paperwork appropriately. Verify paperwork of drivers is correct and input the data into a computer.

  • Assist dispatchers by receiving pick-up calls and assign drivers to their routes.

  • Scan documents such as Bill of Ladings (BOL) and Delivery Receipts (DR) into our system

  • Close off city pickups to the dock and generate manifests for the dockworkers.

  • Set appointments for freight with our customers and make sure the correct people are made aware of the appointments to ensure timely delivery.

  • Provide a pleasant customer service experience in order to ensure repeat business. Continue to have open communications with our customers.

  • Other paperwork dealt with consists of dock delivery/drop offs, driver returns, and damage/overage documents

  • Complete other duties as requested by Service Center Manager.


  • High School Degree or equivalent preferred.

  • Office experience preferred. Microsoft Office Skills using Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook required.

  • Previous experience in the trucking/logistics industry is preferred.

  • 10 key touch is preferred and have the ability to type 40 wpm.

  • Must be able to speak clearly and engage in active listening

Maintains appropriate and required records for team members, equipment and KPI's under their responsibility. * Manages department: budget, hours worked and assignments of work.
