The recruitment range max for this position is $110,000.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) Information Technology Section is responsible for the design, development, and deployment of new law enforcement applications, business applications, and continuous support of existing applications for the SBI.  It is also responsible for assessing needs for required hardware and system products needed to support the infrastructure, which is a mission critical environment supporting the law enforcement community users as well as the SBI.  The section is constantly engaged in research and planning to position its environment to be consistent with North Carolina's statewide technical architecture.  The Operating Systems Specialist II job responsibilities include the following:

  • Support the daily operations, maintenance, and administration of server and storage infrastructure for SBI/IT.

  • Interact often with the Enterprise Backup Software, Commvault Simpana, to ensure nightly backups run successfully.

  • Administration and support of multiple VMware technologies, to include: VMware Virtual Center, VMware ESXi Server, and VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM).

  • Provide administration support skills for multiple versions of Windows Server Datacenter operating systems.  This includes server installation and configuration, server roles, storage, Active Directory and Group Policy, file, print, and web services, remote access, virtualization, application servers, troubleshooting, performance, and reliability.

  • Assign licensing and delegating out permissions to various shared mailboxes.

  • Provide system administration support for Windows Server patching and its integration into multiple production domains.

  • Responsible for the management and configuration of our 3rd party windows patching software used to ensure all servers are fully patched with the latest critical and important updates.

  • Administration and support of Palo Alto Cortex XDR Anti-Virus/Malware protection for all servers within the infrastructure.

  • Responsible for ensuring both daily and nightly backup operations along with being able to restore lost files, servers, and databases for the organization.

  • This position is required to perform on-call duties.  Additional compensation beyond salary is provided for time spent on-call.

This position currently qualifies for a hybrid telework option with routine office and remote workdays after a successful training period.  Any telework will be under the conditions of the State Teleworking Program Policy, and the employer may end any teleworking arrangement at any time at the employer's sole discretion.

To qualify for this position, applicants MUST document on the application that they possess ALL the following:

  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft (MS) Active Directory services/Azure, Microsoft 365 tenant, All MS Windows Server versions, MS SharePoint, MS Teams, and MS Exchange server.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Dell/EMC Storage Arrays (VNX, PowerStore), Dell EMC VxRail technology, Dell EMC MX7000 Blade chassis, and Dell EMC Elastic Cloud Storage (ECS).

  • Demonstrated experience managing a VMware Hypervisor virtual infrastructure.

  • Demostrated experience creating user and resource accounts along with security and distribution groups in Active Directory and on-premise Microsoft Exchange Server 2016.

  • Thorough knowledge of daily administrative tasks within a M365 tenant such as creating users, mailboxes, security and distribution groups.

  • Demonstrated knowledge managing enterprise backup systems for both virtual and physical servers.

  • Demonstrated experience using Powershell and VBScript scripting languages for system administration tasks.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen due to security requirements for accessing SBI applications to which the person in this position must have access.

Bachelor's degree in computer science, or an IT related field or a closely related field, from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of progressive experience in systems software programming; OR

Associate degree in computer science, or an IT related field or a closely related field, from an appropriately accredited institution and five years of progressive experience in systems software programming; OR
