The purpose of this position is to support the daily operations of the Operating Room staff, patient, and facilities.# Perform cleaning of ORs in accordance with AORN and regulatory standards.# Assist the registered nurse in lateral transfer of the patient.#Assist with Positioning OR patient on Surgical bed under direction of RN and in accordance with AORN standards. High school graduate or equivalent.##1 year of healthcare and/or customer service experience.

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Operating Room Assistant supports various aspects of patient care that are within the prescribed skills and required qualifications of this position.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists to set up and maintain the individual operating rooms within Surgical Services.

  • Selects preference cards for surgical cases. Consults with charge nurse for accuracy. Picks surgical case to include surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment.

  • Participates in the stocking, storage and movement of supplies and equipment within the department to meet the overall needs of the individual operating rooms and other Perioperative service areas related to direct and indirect patient care.

  • Places packs and trays in the operating room under the direction of the Circulating RN or Surgical Technologist. Opens sterile supplies and instruments as a member of the surgical team.

  • Connects and checks equipment for proper operation as assigned and under the direction of the Circulating RN or Surgical Technologist.

  • Assures a clean, safe and organized condition to ensure an environment that provides efficient, quality surgical services.

  • Actively participates in the cleaning of equipment and operating room (room turnover) following surgical cases. Demonstrates an understanding of basic infection control principles. Within the surgical services department, daily maintains an environment that is clean, pleasant and organized.

  • Provides functional support to surgical team members within and without the department to meet the overall needs of the Perioperative department related to patient care.

  • Demonstrates the basic knowledge of age-specific principles when choosing appropriate equipment or transportation needs for patients. Assists patient care team and anesthesia staff in the treatment and care of patients in accordance with established policies, procedures and standards of care.

  • Under the direction of the Circulating RN, participates in tasks necessary to support patient care, such as transportation, positioning and lifting. Assists with surgical preps. Stocks shelves with surgical supplies and fluids in compliance with par levels.

  • Assists in Sterile Processing Department in as needed basis including taking call in rotation per department protocol.

  • Transports specimens or product to various organizational departments maintaining patient confidentiality and specimen or product integrity.

  • Utilizes computer skills and organizational computer systems to facilitate the efficiency of the Perioperative department. Inputs and accesses specific computer systems to support the function of the operating room within the limits of assigned security. Uses technology appropriately to communicate and retrieve information.

  • May be required to perform other duties of lesser, equal or greater levels of responsibility, as delegated by the RN/LPN, in accordance with the NH Nurse Practice Act.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent. College degree preferred.

Experience: 1 year of current hospital, clinic or health related procedural area experience required.

1-3 years of current surgical services experience as an Operating Room Assistant or equivalent required.

Credentials: SPD Certification required. (IAHCSMM or CBSPD)

BLS

  • Within 3 months of hire and maintained on a biannual basis

Basic knowledge of anatomy, medical terminology, aseptic technique, and surgical awareness

Ability to function as a member of a multidisciplinary team, handling a variety of tasks and

fluctuating workloads.

Awareness of Patient Rights

Experienced or skilled in the concepts of electronic information handling including

use of PC's.
