The Operating Engineer Trainee performs job duties under the supervision of a First Class A Engineer or Chief A Engineer until the trainee has obtained a First Class A Engineer license.

Job duties include, but are not limited to, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining plant equipment (turbines, boilers, pumps, compressors, cooling towers, etc.). Trainees operate, inspect, repair, and perform general maintenance on numerous heating and air-conditioning systems, ventilation equipment involving computerized building automation systems, and other related mechanical equipment. Equipment operation and repair includes high/low pressure boilers (steam or hydronic), steam turbines, and chillers located at the MSP International Airport and related campus buildings.

Eligible applicants will meet all minimum requirements for this position. Individuals with a State of MN First Class A Engineer license or above are not eligible for the trainee program and are invited to apply for the Operating Engineer position when it becomes available.

Operating Engineer Trainees are required to make steady progress toward attaining the State of Minnesota First Class A Engineer license. Trainees who successfully complete the trainee program and pass the licensure examination as outlined by the State of Minnesota for First Class A Engineer will be eligible for an Operating Engineer position when available.

Hourly Rate

The 2024 starting hourly rate for the Operating Engineer Trainee is $36.750.

  • This starting hourly rate is 80% of the First Class A Operating Engineer hourly base rate ($45.937) as covered by the collective bargaining unit agreement between the MAC and the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 70.

  • Traineesmayreceive a 5% increase every sixmonths up to 95% of the First Class A Operating Engineer hourly rate until they haveobtained their First Class A Operating Engineer Licensure.

Schedule/Shifts

7:00 a.m.

  • 3:00 p.m. (day)

3:00 p.m.

  • 11:00 p.m. (afternoon)

11:00 p.m.

  • 7:00 a.m. (night)

The trainee position will spend time each year on all three shifts One to two months each year will be spend on both the afternoon and night shifts. The remainder of the year will be on day shift. The schedule and/or shift may be adjusted for training or other purposes.

Safety-sensitive: This is a safety-sensitive position which will require a pre-employment drug screen and physical.

Position Description

Under the supervision of the Chief Engineer, Assistant Chief Engineer, or Operating Engineer, Operating Engineer Trainees will be expected to perform the following job duties:

Boiler Operation

  • Operate and maintain high- and low- pressure steam and hot water boilers

  • Conduct routine inspections and perform preventative maintenance on boilers, safety equipment, and other equipment

  • Prepare boilers for inspections

  • Change boilers to alternative fuels, oil & jet fuel from natural gas

  • Control operation and adjustment of water softeners, feed water systems, fuel oil, jet fuel pumps, etc.

  • Perform chemical analysis of boiler water, test and treat condensate return, and accurately prepare reports

  • Observe related boiler equipment; makes necessary adjustments and repairs

  • Perform emergency repairs to boilers or related equipment as directed

  • Order and receive deliveries of oil and jet fuel

Turbine Operation

  • Operate high pressure steam turbines

  • Conduct routine inspections and perform preventative and corrective maintenance on steam power turbines

  • Start up, synchronize,shut down, and adjust turbines

Chiller Operation

  • Operate chiller compressors (reciprocating and centrifugal), cooling towers and related equipment

  • Start up, shut down, inspect, and perform preventative maintenance on cooling towers systems, pumps, valves, etc.

  • Perform chemical analysis of chiller loop water and condenser water, treat, and accurately prepare reports

Building Automation

  • Regularly scan heating and cooling systems; troubleshoot electronic and pneumatic control centers; make adjustments to maintain proper climate controls

  • Control ventilating equipment in vehicle tunnels

  • Respond to alarms, identify malfunctions or abnormal operation of equipment and facilities; make necessary adjustments or emergency repairs and inform proper authorities

Building Maintenance

  • Perform preventative maintenance on HVAC units

  • Maintain, repair and troubleshoot heating and cooling systems

  • Perform emergency assistance with vendors during equipment or other energy management failures affecting terminal operation

  • Appropriately apply lock-out/tag-out and other safety procedures

Miscellaneous Duties

  • Maintain safe and clean facilities

  • Read charts, gauges, levels, and temperatures for all systems; accurately document data as required

  • Maintain daily log on equipment performance and plant activities

  • Operate computerized preventative maintenance program

  • Complete other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Two years of skilled mechanical and/or facilities maintenance experience including mechanical HVAC, steam or hot water boilers and/or chemical control testing

  • OR - enrollment in, or completion of, an HVAC training program
  • Good mathematical aptitude

  • Valid State of Minnesota Special Boiler Operator license or ability to obtain licensure by hire date

  • Valid state-issued driver's license

  • Ability to work within small and confined spaces and from ladder/lifts at varying heights

  • Ability to lift, position and pull up to 50 pounds

  • Clear and articulate written and oral communication skills

  • Basic skill level in word processing and email computer functions

  • Willing to respond to emergency calls seven days a week on a 24-hour basis

  • Ability to obtain and maintain MAC required licenses and/or certifications

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience in HVAC operations

  • State of Minnesota Boiler License (below First Class A Engineer)

  • Experience in maintenance and repairs including boilers, chillers, air handling systems, piping systems, pumps, air conditioning/refrigeration systems, emergency generators and/or building/equipment electrical systems

  • Valid State of Minnesota Universal Refrigeration Certificate

  • Experience using a Building Automation System (BAS), Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), and/or other facilities maintenance system
