Position Summary

The College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Georgia invites applications for a clinical (non-tenure) track, tenure track, or tenured faculty position in veterinary neurology at the rank of assistant, associate, or full professor.

The successful candidate will join a small animal neurology service that provides support to the University of Georgia Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The program currently trains residents and specialty interns.

The surgery service also provides support to the rotating small animal interns during rotations on the neurology service. Faculty members enjoy a diverse caseload with ongoing clinical and bench top research projects, extensive collaborations with other services, and opportunities for teaching students and house officers.

The successful candidate will join a neurology service with two full-time faculty members, three residents, and two dedicated technicians in support of the University of Georgia Veterinary Teaching Hospital, a 300,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility. The service enjoys ready access to a Siemens 3.0T MRI unit, 3rd generation 128-slice helical CT, Nicolet electrophysiological testing equipment (EMG, nerve conduction, and EEG), fluoroscopy, intraoperative C-arm, digital radiography, an ultrasonic aspirator and a Medtronic Stealth Trio stereotactic biopsy unit.

This active clinical service providing medical neurology and neurosurgical care for approximately 500-600 new referral cases per year. The majority of neurosurgery is performed by the neurology service, although after-hours emergency neurosurgical case responsibilities are shared with the department's surgery services. The neurology service benefits from collegial relations and the support of the other hospital services including oncology, radiation therapy, surgery, anesthesia, and critical care.

Teaching is a priority of the neurology service. The current veterinary curriculum has approximately 40 contact hours for neurology with third-year students, with additional contact hours in the first year of the curriculum. The neurology faculty is involved in a number of graduate and post-graduate courses, including continuing education courses for graduate veterinarians.

Additional Requirements

Candidates should have completed or be in the process of completing an approved residency of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine or European College of Veterinary Neurology, and have board certification or be eligible for board certification.

To be eligible for tenure upon appointment, candidates must be appointed as an associate or full professor, have been tenured at a prior institution, and bring a demonstrable national reputation to the institution. Candidates must be approved for tenure upon appointment before hire.

The major responsibilities of this position will be to teach and provide service in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, to teach pre-clinical didactic and laboratory courses in neurology to veterinary students, to actively participate in the training of neurology and non-neurology house officers, and to develop a research program, which can be independent or collaborative. Proportionate assignments for each area are based on the interests of the candidate, faculty assignment, and the missions of the neurology program and department.
