University Of Tulsa Tulsa , OK 74120

Posted 3 weeks ago

The Department of Education at The University of Tulsa (TU) invites applications for an open rank tenure track professor beginning in August 2024. Candidates with background expertise in language and literacy studies are strongly preferred.

The Department is seeking a conscientious colleague-preferably someone trained in language and literacy studies and closely related fields (e.g., reading, writing, multilingual learning, and English education). The successful applicant will be expected to maintain an active scholarly agenda, collaborate with colleagues in grant writing, teach courses at the undergraduate level, contribute to ongoing assessment and accreditation activities, and participate in other forms of departmental and university-level service.

We are particularly, though not exclusively, interested in candidates who meet the criteria for a tenured appointment at the associate or full professor rank and who are also well versed in CAEP accreditation requirements (ideally having served as a CAEP site reviewer).

A new hire who possesses the relevant leadership qualities and experience may have an opportunity to serve as department Chair in the near future. In addition to assuming leadership of the department (including oversight of personnel, curriculum and scheduling, resources and budgets, recruitment and retention of students, etc.), the Chair also has direct CAEP accreditation oversight and responsibility. The Chair also is expected to maintain close and collegial relationships with departments across the TU campus, local public school partners, leaders of state education agencies, and the heads of other educator preparation programs throughout Oklahoma.

ENVIRONMENT

The Department of Education, in partnership with other academic departments across the University, oversees undergraduate teacher licensure programs in elementary and secondary education. Situated within the Henry Kendall College of Arts and Sciences, the Department offers its students a robust liberal arts education combined with extensive field experiences in diverse school settings. The Department is committed to cultivating effective teachers who are critical thinkers, skillful learners, caring community partners, and engaged democratic citizens.

The University of Tulsa is experiencing significant transformation, including a new strategic plan, which leverages the University's strengths as a highly regarded, small, private research institution. The plan focuses on the University's role in fostering the next generation of researchers, scholars, creators, and entrepreneurs across all fields by offering unprecedented resources and support to attract the best students. The university's publicly stated goal is to achieve R1 status (it is currently R2).

TU is located in midtown Tulsa, approximately two miles from downtown. Both areas are undergoing an exciting period of growth and are home to vibrant art and music scenes. Tulsa is a mid-sized (population ~400,000), family-friendly, affordable place to live, with easy access to urban, suburban, and rural areas. The city of Tulsa is nestled in an area where the Muscogee Creek, Cherokee, and Osage tribal territories share a common boundary. Tulsa is also home to The Gathering Place, an expansive riverside park, that Time magazine calls "One of the World's Greatest Places" (https://www.gatheringplace.org/). Oklahoma is geographically diverse, including plains, grasslands, rocky mesas, and mountains, and is culturally unique as it is home to 39 federally recognized Native American tribes.
