Position Summary

UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center (LCCC) is one of the largest research organizations in the UNC system. UNC Lineberger is the only public NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center within the State of North Carolina and supports 425 members, 605 staff, nine research programs, and 32 shared resources. UNC Lineberger has been rated an exceptional NCI center in the last three CCSG cycles (2010,2015,2020) making it eligible to extend the current cycle to 2027.

North Carolina state leaders see LCCC as the jewel of cancer research in our state. Their belief in our ability to find better treatments and cures for cancer has resulted in an annual appropriation of $59 million from the state budget for the University Cancer Research Fund (UCRF). LCCC serves the entire State of North Carolina, pulling patients from all 100 counties, and has more than 6,000 new analytic cases yearly. The catchment area represents broad diversity with regard to rural, urban, socioeconomic status, gender, race and ethnicity.

LCCC is the center of cancer research at UNC-Chapel Hill and beyond. LCCC focuses on a mission to propel cancer research for the state of North Carolina, the nation, and the globe to improve patient outcomes.

As a large matrix cancer center, they are physically located in the center of the medical campus in the UNC Lineberger building, a 79,000 square foot building dedicated exclusively to cancer research. It is flanked by Marsico Hall (completed in 2015) and the Mary Ellen Jones Building (completed in 2021), where LCCC has additional wet and dry research facilities. LCCC has more than 170,000 square feet of dedicated research across the campus.

Patients are seen in Basnight Cancer Hospital completed in 2009. The faculty are representative of the broad scope and depth of LCCC's cancer research enterprise. Forty-eight departments are represented across the campus, including those in the Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Public Health, Dentistry, Journalism, Social Work, and the College of Arts and Sciences.

LCCC, in conjunction with academic departments in the UNC School of Medicine, is seeking an outstanding faculty candidate for an open rank faculty position, fixed term or tenure/tenure track, with clinical expertise, and/or expertise in translational cancer research. Responsibilities will be directly tied to the primary mission of the UNC School of Medicine: integration of patient care, excellence in education, and supporting outstanding research programs and initiatives.

Appointment and rank in an academic department will be determined by the applicant's qualifications. This position will hold a primary faculty appointment within the School of Medicine, with a secondary administrative appointment as the Director of the LCCC.

The Director of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center (LCCC) is a senior leadership position in the UNC School of Medicine, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and UNC Health, responsible for overseeing all aspects of the LCCC's operations, including research initiatives, program development and administrative functions across the School of Medicine as well as University platforms. The Director serves as the Principal Investigator (PI) for the NCI P30 Cancer Center Support Grant, which designates Lineberger as an NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center; and leads innovative research strategies to transform the LCCC.

The Director is viewed as the State's leader in cancer research among public policy leaders. They manage the University Cancer Research Fund (the first of its kind established over a decade ago) through public support by the State of North Carolina to the tune of a recurring appropriation of $59.5M per year.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

MD, MD/PhD, DO or PhD (required). Academic experience on a national/international level supporting a professorial appointment in an appropriate department.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Significant leadership experience at an executive level within an NCI-designated cancer center. This role demands a proven, highly effective leader.

  • Demonstrated excellence in attracting, recruiting and developing world-class scientific and clinical leaders, team building, vision and strategy setting and execution of multi-faceted decisions.

  • Strong understanding of cancer care, clinical research and healthcare operations in a highly matrixed, multidisciplinary and interprofessional environment.

  • Experience with external relations including legislative advocacy, community engagement and philanthropy.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.

  • Proven track record of research excellence and previous leadership experience in academic medicine.

  • Proficiency in budget management and financial analysis on a significant/similar scale.

Special Physical/Mental Requirements Campus Security Authority Responsibilities

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
