Title Open Publishing Librarian Appointment Status Tenure Department IU Bloomington Libraries Location Bloomington Position Summary
The Open Publishing Librarian is responsible for the IU Libraries' Open Access (OA) journal publishing program, which publishes over 50 OA journals, including a number of student journals. This position serves as the primary liaison to editorial teams, conducts training and outreach, and supports the creation of new journals. The Open Publishing Librarian supports new journals with the creation of their journal and instructs them on the use of Open Journal System (OJS) and best practices for journal publishing. This position will work collaboratively with colleagues on other open publishing initiatives in the Libraries Scholarly Communication department and will coordinate and collaborate with Indiana University Press colleagues on journal publishing infrastructure and practices as a part of Indiana Publishing.
This position reports to the Head of Libraries Scholarly Communication and is a member of a high- functioning and highly collaborative department.
Responsibilities
Serve as primary liaison to IU Libraries' journal editorial teams
As product owner for Open Journal Systems (OJS), serve as a liaison between developers, journal editors, and users, and continually prioritize and assess user needs
Develop and implement policies, procedures and initiatives that support library publishing
Create, revise, and conduct training and onboarding for new IU OA journals and new journal editors
Regularly communicate and collaborate with Libraries Communication and IU Communications to highlight and promote IU publications
Assess and implement new research and tools to improve the accessibility of journal publishing program and discoverability of journals
Evaluate IU student-run journals and explore models to strengthen the growth and support of IU student journals
Regularly communicate with open access journal editors to promote equitable publishing practices and create or modify tools to support these practices
Work with the Libraries Scholarly Communication Department and Indiana University Press to support collaborative Libraries' publishing through Indiana Publishing
Collaborate with Libraries Scholarly Communication Department to create educational materials and engage in outreach related to open access scholarly publishing for the IU community
Promote the Libraries' culture of diversity and inclusion, and support the values outlined in the Libraries' Diversity Strategic Plan (https://libraries.indiana.edu/file/diversity-strategic-plan- 20162017pdf)
Basic Qualifications
Required Qualifications
ALA-accredited graduate degree in library or information science; or an advanced degree in a relevant discipline and appropriate experience in an academic setting will also be considered.
Demonstrated understanding of, and the ability to promote, the Libraries' culture of diversity and inclusion, and support the Libraries values and strategic goals (https://libraries.indiana.edu/administration#panel-about)), and the Libraries' Diversity Strategic Plan (https://libraries.indiana.edu/libraries-diversity-resources)
Demonstrated knowledge of current issues and trends in scholarly communication and open publishing
Demonstrated experience working with journal editors, content providers, and student editorial teams
Demonstrated experience planning, implementing, and managing publishing workflows
Demonstrated experience establishing, maintaining, and updating journal sites on the OJS platform
Demonstrated experience writing documentation for software and training purposes
Demonstrated working knowledge of JATS XML and publishing metadata schemas
Demonstrated ability to work individually and in a highly collaborative environment
Evidence of excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
