Position Summary

The OPAT Program Technician, working with the ECU Health Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy Program, will assume a technical support role in infectious diseases ambulatory and home care practice. The individual will work with an OPAT Pharmacist Coordinator and members of an interdisciplinary team to provide outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) services across the ECU Health System, which includes all system hospitals, provider clinics, infusion centers and home health services.

Responsibilities

Work closely with physicians, nurses, and pharmacists across the continuum of care to ensure safe, timely, and effective OPAT treatment and monitoring.

Support transitions of care services from acute care to home infusion or skilled nursing facilities. Assist with administrative tasks as needed. Examples include faxing orders, scanning, data collection, and data analysis.

Support quality improvement projects for OPAT services.

Keep updated documentation of pending labs for discharged patients and ensure pharmacist or physician receives labs within 24h.

Assist with antibiotic discharge medication reconciliation as identified by pharmacist or physician.

Assist OPAT team with outpatient scheduling of appointments as requested or needed.

Contacts OPAT patients within 48h of discharge to introduce program and provide program contact information.

Help manage needs for medication refills.

Field and triage patient calls and concerns to appropriate OPAT team member.

Communicate with home infusion companies when OPAT patients have been readmitted to a ECU Health Hospital.

Identify, assess, and resolve barriers to medication access with clinician collaboration.

Identify opportunities for medication assistance from drug companies and coordinate with OPAT team and ECUH Medication Access Program.

Communicate with OPAT patients weekly to identify potential adverse drug reactions. Provide update to pharmacist and/or physician on potential problems detected.

Assist with preauthorization of medications as needed.

Attend POCR rounds to help screen candidates for inclusion into OPAT program.

Other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by program leadership.

Minimum Requirements

High School of Equivalent (GED) or higher

Three to four years of progressive pharmacy technician experience.

PTCB Certification- CPhT within one year of hire.

Excellent interpersonal communication skills (written and verbal).

Attention to detail and commitment to high quality patient experience.
